Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 24, 2016 7:57 pm Inspected my new double story house today and was surprised to see how they have setup the upstairs down stairs zone control. Silly me I expected when I purchased a multi zone system the installer would install a zone controller and a slave thermostat. But no what is installed is a single zone controller and a light switch below to turn the zones on and off. The controller and these switches are located at the top of the stairs. So not sure how well it is going to work downstairs if the thermostat is upstairs. The system is a Daikin reverse cycle. Anyone else have zones setup this way? As a electronics/communications tech I am just amazed at how agricultural the setup is What is worse is I have a c-bus system so even doing it this was if someone had of said something I could have got them to run the zone dampers of one of my spare relays. That way I could at the least would have been able to switch the zones from downstairs too. Re: Ducted heating zone control 2Jun 24, 2016 11:18 pm Is it written in your contract what sort of zoning you were going to get? If the walls aren't sheeted yet and you feel inclined to pull some cable, run a multi-core or get it run from the zone control switches to your cbus relay panel. Re: Ducted heating zone control 3Jun 25, 2016 9:00 pm The contract has no specific mention except the brand and 2 zones as standard. And in our selections doco it talks about the zones but no mention of how they planned to zone. Must admit I've never ever seen such a crude way to do it. Forgetting the aesthetics and having to walk up stairs to change zones and set temperature, I really cannot see how this could even work properly. Say I just want downstairs warmed, as the system is getting the temperature from upstairs how can the temp downstairs actually be controlled? Its not like there is a separate return with thermostat in it. Additionally I don't think there is a common zone so if both zones are off will that damage or otherwise upset the system? All very easy to fix. The ideal place for a downstairs controller backs onto the powder room vent stack so have a clear zone to drop a cable. So ideal solution is main zone controller, slave controller and remove the mechanical zone switched and fill the hole. Doubt they will come to party with that, so might push them to rewire the zones switched to my c-bus relays (very simple) and patch the hole left by the switch, then approach someone to zone properly later. To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless.
