Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 05, 2016 1:07 pm Advice from the experts please on what is the most economical way to use a Rinnai Avenger 25 gas convector heater. Being home all day I wonder whether we should use the timer to come on in the morning and night and wear warmer clothes throughout the day (even though my hands and feet freeze) when the heater isn't on? OR whether leaving on all day at say 19degrees and until nightime would be better (as i would imagine when the room gets warm enough it cuts out)... We do not have solar electric panels or any other form of heating. The area it is heating is kitchen/family/dining Thanks Re: Most economical way to use Gas Convector Heater 2Jun 06, 2016 11:21 pm Everybody is different and everyone will have a different opinion on economical usage vs. comfort. What you should be asking yourself is, Have you approximated what the heater costs to run? How much are you willing to pay to run the heater? What setpoint do you normally have it set to? Have you tried or would you consider setting it slightly lower (eg. 1 degree)? How well does your home hold in the heat? Is your space you are looking at heating able to be closed off from the unused part of the house? The way I utilize my hydronic heating is heat to 20 degrees in the mornings for an hour and a half as it's easier to get toddlers out of bed and off to creche on the days my partner and I both work and 3 hours on the days she's not at work and at home with the girls. During the day, generally the heating is off unless my partner and girls are home. At 5 in the afternoon the heating will come back on and heat to 21 degrees until bedtime (unless the outside air temperature as measured from a probe is above 21 degrees and heating is locked out). Overnight, we leave the heating on 18.5 or 19 degrees as we find the girls are sometimes unsettled when it's too cold. As for cost, I couldn't tell you exactly yet as I'm going through my first winter now though haven't had a gas bill to give me a shock yet. We're still in the process of fine tuning and adjusting the different setpoints but looking at the trend logs and seeing that the house hasn't dropped below 18 degrees either day or night, it's quite possible that we may be adjusting setpoints slightly down. I personally think that there's no point is having your own home and not being comfortable in it but that's just my opinion. hth Thank you. That is really helpful. Once we get the place done and passed for OC we can upgrade in the future once we get back on our feet and not paying mortgage and rent. 4 5713 The worst thing you can do is sign a building contract without a pre contract review.
