What are the requirements for a zoned unit? That is, do rooms that are zoned together need to be close together, and can individual rooms be in their own zone? Re: Zoned ducted heating vs. closing vents 2May 30, 2016 11:51 am I don't know - but we have zoned and it works well. Daikin. Re: Zoned ducted heating vs. closing vents 3May 30, 2016 1:27 pm If it's anything like the ducted air conditioning zoning systems, they just adjust a damper in the duct line to close off the airflow, so if the duct itself can be closed off instead, then it's doing the same thing. Perhaps one thing that the zoning system does is automatically ensure that one zone is always open to prevent the system destroying itself if someone tries to close them all off. If money isn't an issue, you just put each room on it's own zone. Then each room needs it's own zone motor. You can try to economise by running the outlet of a single zone motor into multiple rooms, but if the outlets on a given zone aren't grouped together, then the ducting could get complex. Re: Zoned ducted heating vs. closing vents 4May 31, 2016 5:25 pm This doesn't really answer your question but my father in law swears by just closing of the vents in unused rooms. Personally we have gone with zoned because we will use all of our rooms at various times of the day and I don't fancy opening and closing vents every morning and night, nor do I want to heat the whole house all the time. However if you have a half empty house with rooms that are only used occasionally then it might make sense. Re: Zoned ducted heating vs. closing vents 6Jun 01, 2016 4:02 pm I was told that each unit (heat and cool) has minimum airflow requirements, so if you block off some vents and it doesn't impede on the minimum airflow requirements then you'll be totally fine. But if you do impede the minimum flow the you could break the unit and also void any warranties. It appears you need to have open at least 5-7 heating vents. I am trying it myself tonight. I am closing 3 rooms off (3xheating vents and doors to rooms) and having the other 7 heating outlets open to see how it goes. We live in the back half of the house(Living and main bedroom). The front rooms I closed were the 2 other bedrooms and main bathroom that we don't normally use. I don't have motorised zoning to utilize. I just manually closed the ceiling heating vents. My door tends to rub against the frame during winter and I'm looking to fix it so it closes smoothly.
