Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 24, 2016 3:38 pm Wondering if anyone can help me out, I'm currently sorting out our refrigerated ducted cooling for a big double we're building with Burbank and they after 6+ months of fluffing about saying they can do it, we found out they basically are only willing to put in single splits or evaporative on the top level. We wanted to have some sort of zoned refrigerated cooling so am thinking about doing it post handover so we can move forward. Does anyone know if multi headed splits can be installed to a downstairs of a double post handover? Just wondering about where the popes etc would go? Thanks for the help Customised Burbank Indigo/Hawthorn in Officer VIC https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... 2#p1680752 Re: Multi headed splits. Can you install after build? 2May 24, 2016 4:48 pm I suppose it could be done but it would be more expensive to install. Plus the length of the pipes (depending on your floor plan and where you put the heads and condenser) could make the units less effective. I think they loose efficiency over longer runs but I could be mistaken here. Can you install after build? 3May 24, 2016 9:20 pm It would be extremely difficult, and you'd end up with pipes all over the outside of your house. Following on from HomeAngel's comments, a decent brand multi-head system (Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, etc) will allow up to 100m of pipe if sized and specced correctly without affecting the efficiency or longevity of the compressor. Re: Multi headed splits. Can you install after build? 5May 26, 2016 2:06 am Awesome, so it can be done but will not be the most attractive option. It's not the ideal situation and I'd much prefer to have the builder put something in, but they just can't seem to get what we want I figure having 6+ boxes outside from all the splits we'd need would be a lot worse than exposed pipes. Can you install after build? 7May 26, 2016 6:28 am Can't you tell the builder to forget about it, go find a good air conditioning contractor, get them to design and price the system you want, then give it to the builder and say "give me this"? Can you install after build? 8May 26, 2016 7:22 pm We asked the builders if we could do that and they said no, they don't allow other contractors on site due to insurance issues. But some good news today we found the contractor that they use and spoke to them directly, they have a lot of options that could work for us including ducted throughout the house (with zones!) and will let our builder know and see if they want to play ball. Hopefully we can still sort something out cos quite frankly I'm dumbfounded they don't want us to spend an extra 30k+ of which I'm sure they'll get a slice. Can you install after build? 9May 26, 2016 8:00 pm Sounds like they are either lazy or incompetent or both. Insurance issues - that's a new one... Can you install after build? 10Jun 01, 2016 4:11 pm Success! We sat down with the supplier today and they helped us to get an actron zoned ducted system put into the house, seems it was always an option but the builder just didn't know what to ask for and kept getting quotes for add on cooling instead which is not what we wanted. So months of fluffing around for absolutely no reason. But I'm just happy we finally have it sorted and can move forward For anyone who is in a similar predicament I would find out who the heating/cooling contractors for your builders are and ask them directly to avoid months of Chinese whispers and stuffing around. Can you install after build? 11Jun 02, 2016 6:15 pm Good to see common sense prevailed... And good advice too by the way. If you want to know about electrical, air con or plumbing stuff it's best to ask a specialist, builders generally wouldn't know a duct spigot from a condenser coil.
