Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Apr 03, 2016 6:35 pm Hey guys, What are your cavities like behind the door? I opened mine the other day for a quick look as I've just taken ownership of the house and was surprised at how unfinished it looks; Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The house I'm currently living in has nice metal cowling behind the door that looks like its been finished properly. I'm sure the end result will be the same, I'm just amazed at how poor the finish is - and the fact that the woodwork can clearly be seen through the filter material when the door is shut. Can't believe I hadn't noticed it before handover. Thanks. Re: Heating/Cooling return cavity 2Apr 03, 2016 8:03 pm Do you know if a return air plenum box was included in your spec? There's no reason what you have wouldn't work as long as it was air tight and ducted at some point back to your indoor unit/ducted heater. Re: Heating/Cooling return cavity 3Apr 04, 2016 5:21 pm Not sure on the plenum box. I'm annoyed because it's such a massive space that seems wasted, the floor is covered in bird poo which is visible through the filter material and I was specifically told that I couldn't put light switches on the side of this air return as there wouldn't be any space for them and therefore had to locate them in a non-convenient location when the truth is I could have put 100 light switches on the wall and not interfered with any thing. Re: Heating/Cooling return cavity 4Apr 04, 2016 6:50 pm Yes voids and plenums can seem like a space that is better utilized but in truth, you'd be better off to have it than not as you could be dealing with nuisance air velocity noise, etc. Yeah the leftover bird poo left in there is a bit ordinary. It wouldn't take much to get an apprentice to scrub it with a mop. It does show though that volume builders just want to throw up a house and move on and not worry about the finer details. Have you gone through your defects yet? Maybe flag it as a defect if it still needs to be done. Re: Heating/Cooling return cavity 7Jan 31, 2017 10:41 pm You missed my point of post. I could see inside my cavity through the grill. To add a filter would have restricted airflow and I would have needed a bigger opening if filtered. I had natural light lighting the inside of cavity and it was visible form dining room table and looked bad. Painting the inside of cavity was done to hide the area so that you now don't see the studs and inside of plaster. Not to beautify the area, just hide it. The heating/cooling tech that came out after handover said if a filter mediun was added, the restriction would be too much. If I wanted it filtered, I would need to increase grill size substantially. I chose his suggestion of painting inside of cavity with blackboard paint. Before I did that, I could see the inside cavity stud work and inside of cavity floor. It is well lit with natural light. The inside of cavity could bee seen sitting at the dinning table. It looke ugly.> I am saying that double brick has similar thermal performance due to thermal mass effect. Would this be the most common method and anybody ever had any problems down the track? 0 5116 Firstly, if your house is still under builder's warranty (10 years in Victoria) you should have no need to crawl into roof space but let the builder handle it, unless you… 3 5633 |
