So today I cut a hole in the top level floor to check out what was in the space between the new floor and the old roof they'd built over the top of. Which is not something that most people do. Now my old roof had something like r2 installed when it was built, (Raked to roof style house) and it had a major 2nd floor addition about 10 years ago - done by the previous owners. The new section is well insulated, walls, ceiling, etc and is very comfy. But lo and behold what did I find when I hopped into this gap between the two areas. Tiles all over the place, NO insulation on a section of 20m2 bare gyprock - and lots and lots of areas where the insualtion had been pulled off to get access to a fix the upper floor on at the edges. Insulation performance - well let's just say significantly impacted I'd estimate something like a 40% decrease on what it will be very soon Motto of the story - don't assume that just becasue the builders did the right thing in the new bit - that they cared diddly squat what happened to the old bit.
