Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 26, 2008 4:44 pm We have recently bought our first house and it is cold.
If I've done this right there will be a photo here showing our fireplace. Everyone who sees this comments on how lovely the rock surround is. Problem is we hate it. We have young kids and do not want to have an open fireplace. So it seems like the best thing to do is install a Jetmaster type of thing. But what should we do with the surround to make it more attractive (to us)? Our only thought is to gyprock around it which also gives me the excuse to buy a flat screen TV to install above the heater. We have had one plasterer look at the wall and they suggested it would be possible to install a TV bracket through the gyprock into the mortar and so if we (or the next owner) wanted to remove the gyprock, they would be able to easily recover the rock wall. The question is what to do with the bit of wall to the left of the chimney. I think it will look weird all covered up with gyprock. We could cut it out I guess but that stops the possibility of recovering the wall later and I'm guessing this would be a fair bit of effort. Any thoughts? I would paint or render that brickwork and make a feature of it in a bold colour. Shove the telly on the wall beside the bricks. I love your cornice…….Clever ****! Love your name as well!!! I think to-do-list was looking at having his TV over his heater. It is discussed a bit in the following threads https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... ire+heater https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... =fireplace Good luck 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: What would you do with this space? 6Jul 26, 2008 6:12 pm Clever **** Hmmm ... kind of had my heart set on the TV above the fire. I've seen this approach in a couple of brochures (which of course doesn't mean anything). My bigger concern is the wall at the left. Will this make everything look somewhat unbalanced? I guess you need to discuses this with someone. Not the person you will be buying the TV off!!!! They will tell you anything! Ask a TV repair man, he will be honest with you. If it’s Ok, then by all means go ahead with it. A nice feature on it own!!! But do something with the bricks. Makes it look like one wall that flows to the doorway. but it does make the doorway a bit deep Steve Re: What would you do with this space? 9Jul 27, 2008 10:26 am I think if you put the TV on the wall it would look very squished, it's a fairly tight space. I'd put the TV on the stone wall, and put a slim vertical mirror or art work on the white wall. Re: What would you do with this space? 10Jul 28, 2008 3:10 pm Problem is that you have competing priorities for the space, being a TV and a heater. The TV will probably grow over time to an AV setup; amp, CD/DVD, centre speaker, game console etc etc. So I'd say put the heater on a different wall (new gas units are quite flexible with where their flue can go)
If I were you I wouldn't care about what the next owners may or may not want. If you can replicate the cornice I'd knock the whole thing down with a sledgehammer and frame/plasterboard back to a nice flat wall. You can then put your TV and stuff in a nice cabinet, and stick the heater somewhere where it won't compete with your AV setup. Cheers, Justin.
