Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Feb 10, 2016 7:20 pm Hi. We are renovating our house in Melbourne. Downstairs: 1 large living/dining/kitchen area, 1 guest bedroom, 1 master w/ ensuite. Upstairs: 2 bedrooms (raked ceilings) and a small living area. We already had an 80s ducted heating system downstairs and installed a Daikin 7.1kW split AC (RXS71LVMA) 2 years ago in our lounge/dining area. Evap AC won't fit in our roof due to the raked ceilings upstairs and the lack of space in the roof void either side of the 2nd storey. New ducted heating + add on cooling would only have 2 zones for AC, would not cool & heat upstairs and would cost $14,700. (BRAEMAR THM6X32 31.2 kW ECOSTAR 6.3 star Gas Heater EXTRA AIR + ACTRON SRA171C 16.8 kW Single Phase Add On Air Conditioning. 10 floor. 1 on/off zone, 1 common). New ducted heating + a multi-head split AC unit would feel like a waste of money since the split ACs have the capacity to cool and would cost $12970. BRAEMAR THM623 22.5 kW ECOSTAR 6.3 star Gas Heater. 10 floor. 1 on/off zone, 1 common. FUJITSU AOTG30LBTA4 8 kW Multi Head INVERTER Split System Outdoor Unit + 2X FUJITSU ASTG09LVC 2.7 kW Wall Mounted Multi Head INVERTER Indoor Unit + 2X FUJITSU ASTG12LVC 3.5 kW Wall Mounted Multi Head INVERTER Indoor Unit. So it looks as though we will go with a multi-head split system for our heating & cooling and reinstall our Daikin 7.1kW for our large living/dining/kitchen area downstairs. The Fujitsu multi-head system mentioned above will cost $7,900 installed. Does that sound right? We have been told that a similar Mitsubishi Electric system would be the same price and a Daikin unit would cost $1,000-$2,000 more. The installer didn't mention having 4 seperate units instead of the multi. Re: Advice on Multi-head split AC system 2Feb 11, 2016 12:22 am Without knowing any other details other than the capacity of the indoor units, sounds about right... If you're unsure maybe get another quote from someone else? I'll give you an comparison, I priced my Mitsubishi Heavy Industries 10kW Multi-head system with 3 x 2kW Diamond indoor units (high COP option) and a 3.5kW Diamond indoor unit to do the bedrooms at home at $8600 installed. This included provisions for locating the outdoor unit wall mounted on the first floor wall and the hire of lifting equipment to get it up there (~100kg). hth Re: Advice on Multi-head split AC system 3Feb 11, 2016 7:04 pm Thanks. Out of interest was it a new build/rennovation? Part of the quote is to hide the pipes in the wall cavity so there will be nothing visible from the outside as our inverter will be at ground level. Any reason for choosing a Mitsubishi? Re: Advice on Multi-head split AC system 4Feb 11, 2016 9:52 pm Upstairs was a new extension, downstairs was completely gutted back to bare frame so essentially a complete new build of sorts. Yes all of my pipework is run internally in walls, etc. I've got indoor units in bedrooms upstairs mounted above windows. The indoor unit in the upstairs common area is mounted above 2 long vertical windows. See attached pictures. I've also attached pictures showing location of the 4 outdoor units. Why Mitsubishi? I've always been a big fan of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries brand from back when it was directed primarily at commercial markets. Now not much difference between Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as both crossover into domestic and commercial markets. I chose MHI as I preferred all the pipework to run back to the outdoor unit rather than using branch boxes. The 3 splits I have in the main common areas are all MHI so I preferred to keep all the brands the same for aesthetics.
