Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 25, 2015 7:03 am Hi All, We got into contract with Vogue Homes for our house build at St. Helens Park, MacArthur. I have a question related to installation of ceiling fans. Is it possible to get ceiling fans installed after we get possession of house. Or I should get it done while the house is getting built? Of course this would be done by licensed electrician. Please suggest. Re: Installing Ceiling Fans after possession 2Nov 25, 2015 8:29 am Hi and the answer is either or, get their electrician to run the wire and then add fans yourselves, will be cheaper I expect, you could get your electrician to do the wiring after but could be more difficult particularly if double storey and you're talking about lower floor fan install. Of course I'm not an electrician just my thoughts. If it's only one or two fans, and you're not getting any other electrical work done post-handover, then you would likely be better to get them to do it, unless they are really expensive. If it's single storey and you're getting a number of things done after handover, like downlights, then using your own electrician for a set of jobs is likely to end up cheaper. There are around 4 ways that builders will often do it:
When I owner-built, contracting my own electrician, putting in the provision cost almost nothing, and so I did it for most rooms. Builders tend to charge a fair bit for it though, and often it ends up most cost effective for them to fit a fan that you supply. Re: Installing Ceiling Fans after possession 4Nov 25, 2015 10:39 am Ceiling sweep fans should not be fixed directly to plaster board sheeting, but instead fixed to a timber blocking piece installed in the ceiling. This timber blocking piece is easy to install before the ceiling goes up, but can be difficult (or sometimes impossible) to install afterwards depending on if there is adequate ceiling access. Ideally the builder should install the blocking piece and his electrician a lighting outlet/batten and light switch. This would avoid the need to go into the roof space later to install the sweep fan Re: Installing Ceiling Fans after possession 5Nov 25, 2015 5:10 pm Thanks guys for the reply. I have already asked my builder to provide me quote for the same. Now waiting for him to come back. Best option seems to be ask him to provision it for me and then we will look over it. And yes we are planning to have down lights installed post handover. But was not sure about Ceiling Fan. Hi, We're building with a volume builder, and added provisions for ceiling fans.
