Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 15, 2008 4:21 pm Okay here's the thing. Just moved into our house to discover it's absolutely freezing particularly as there is no heating. After receiving a reasonable quote for gas ducted heating and all ready to go ahead questions started popping into my head. This is the house we plan to stay in for at least ten years or more so we need to plan for the future. we currently have evaporative cooling (in Adelaide) but haven't had to get through a scorching summer so far so don't know how effective it is in our little timber frame cottage. So, firstly - does anyone know if you can convert ducted evaporative cooling to refrigerated? Then the question is - do we stick with evap cooling and just get ducted gas heating so we can stop freezing our butts off now? Do we consider gas ducted heating/refrigerated cooling in the one unit? If evap can be converted to refridgerated do we get gas ducted heating and then after the summer consider changing to refrigerated if the evap just doesn't cut it? It's extremely tempting to just get the gas ducted heating installed in seven days time and worry about the summer when it comes but it's a lot of money to spend and get it wrong! Any suggestions? Re: Evap cooling and refrig... 2Jul 20, 2008 9:08 pm first question - no evap can't be converted to refig or vice-versa. Now the real fun begins - if you need a new heating system AND want refrig cooling then you MUST have the heating system designed for the refrig cooling. Even if you put in the cooling later, the heater and ductwork must be designed for a/c. So that should add about $1500 to the cost of the heating system on average. It then gives you an opportunity to have a/c whenever you like - but if the evap works well you've really only blown $1500
It's hard to decide what to do. Evap cooling seems to work less as the years go by due to more and more humid days, well in melbourne anyway. Hope this helps somewhat.
