Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 28, 2015 11:52 am Hi All, i am building a 26sq house with Metricon. The standard package comes with ducted heating. As we are building under budget, i am tossing around with the following decisions 1. do we add AC at building stage ? If we add later on , does that mean the existing heating is wasted ? 2. If we do add now with Metricon , what type of AC should we have? Metricon offers Celair brand evaporative cooling standard ones ( no zoneing) for $5000. Is this competitive price ? If evaporative cooling effective ? Our sales consultant at Metricon told us when it is 45 degrees in the summer , this system can only bring the temperature down by 10 degree which will still be really hot. Thanks !! Re: Ducted Heating & Cooling 2Aug 28, 2015 1:01 pm Personally i think evaporative cooling is rubbish. In some weather it can make everything in your house damp, and wont do much in summer where you have extended series of hot days). You want refridgerated cooling for best results. That is the propper AC youre likley familiar with. Evaporative's main benefit is that its cheaper to run. But do you want cheaper to run, or do you want cooling that works when you need it most? As to whether the ducted heating unit is concerned you have a few options. 1. get them to remove it and credit you. Get the wehole job done after hand over (cheapest option, but will still cost arround 10-12k but you will get a gredit of approx 2k for the removal of the unit and labour, so you could come in arround 8-k if you take that into account) 2. get the builder to upgrade the unit to one that is appropriate for cooling (usually has a higher air flow) and get them to upgrade the ducts ready for cooling, and then get the aircon guys to come in and install an addon cooling unit. (second cheapest option, but by the time the builder stings you for each incremental upgrade for zones, ducts and upgrade to heating unit, you will be either close or a couple of grand over the price mentioned above) 3. you could get the builder to put in the whole heating/cooling system (most expensive, usually a 5-20k premium depending on house size and unit choice, over getting it done after hand over). With this option you are able to tack it on to your mortgage, but the downfall is that you pay interes on that extra amount over time. So if youre money conscious, this should be a serious thought for you, because youll be paying a massive premium over the life of your loan if you chose this option. Contact a couple of cooling places, give them your plans and ask for a quote. Youll get an idea of whats best for you. Where are you located? Re: Ducted Heating & Cooling 3Aug 28, 2015 1:41 pm The viability of evaporative A/C depends a lot on where you live. In a dry climate it will generally keep things comfortable up to around 40 degrees outside temperature, and some people talk of managing a 15 degree differential on hot dry days. They also provide air movement, which can make it feel cooler as well. But then it will also be more humid inside than with refrigerated A/C. Also, if you do significant heating, depending on gas prices, reverse cycle A/C may be cheaper to run than gas heating, and so offset some of the extra summer cooling costs. Re: Ducted Heating & Cooling 4Aug 28, 2015 3:21 pm Thanks Ponzu !! I'm in Melbourne . Building in Cranbourne. I like your option one . Will get couple of quotations for sure . Thanks again Re: Ducted Heating & Cooling 6Aug 28, 2015 5:13 pm Yes I am building single storey house, 26 sq. I have called three dealer this arvo, emailed them drawings . Waiting for them to come back to me . I just wish Metricon will not stuff up On things/provisions I need them to do for installation after handover. Thank you! Re: Ducted Heating & Cooling 7Aug 29, 2015 4:07 pm The only thing you need provisioned is the gas line in the ceiling and a PowerPoint. Although the ax installer's sparkie will prob Aly put one in anyway in the total price. Good luck. No evaporate cooling, the only good thing for evap cooling is cheaper to run but not efficient for coastal area. Ducted heating ducting insulation should be different from air conditioning ducting. The air flow rates are different as well. The duct size wouldn't fit for both application. If your area is not that hot, you can just install a wall mounted split in the living area. $3900 deposit Oct 2013 5% April 14 Council submission May 14 DA Aug 14 CC Oct 14 Demo Oct 2014 Dec 2014 Slab 15 Sep 2015, roof tiles finished 16 Feb 16 keys Re: Ducted Heating & Cooling 11Aug 31, 2015 9:39 pm Hi surzp , I am in Victoria too. Melb. I read on BOM website . Melbourne turn to have a very wet summer so we are not taking the chance with evapo . What we planed to do now is to ask metricon to upgrade the ducted gas heating to a more efficient one that has zoning . Most importantly, we want a system that is compatible with actronair ac. We are building under budget so don't want to add 15k now and pay 25 years interest . Quite few AC dealer have interest free periods up to 24 month. We will go for that option later on. Good decision ? Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house. Does this placement sound reasonable to you? Also, I plan to have 6 zones I think.
