Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 02, 2015 3:36 pm My builder has quoted me $380 to upgrade my ducted heating to 2 zones. My house is 16 square single story. The plan would be to have 4 ducts in the open living area and 4 in the bedrooms and bathroom. Do you think it would be worth paying the additional money to have 2 zones, or would 1 zone be sufficient for my house? I will also have a split system in the living area for air con. I would prefer to have a higher rated system (energy conscience) and I would like to be able to program the system to turn on at certain times. Do I need to ask for these things or are they standard? Help! Re: Zoned Heating - Worth the upgrade? 3Aug 05, 2015 2:08 am I agree go for zoned and check if a programmable thermostat is included with the package or how much more to upgrade to one. This isn't a deal breaker though as it could also be installed later down the track. Re: Zoned Heating - Worth the upgrade? 4Aug 05, 2015 6:49 pm If you're energy consious, zoning your heating will reduce energy consumption, & will be great for your wallet & the environment. But any ducting will reduce efficiencies. But if you have AC, why do you need a separate ducted heating system at all? Why not use your split AC for heating? Modern inverter split systems are extremely efficient at heating, up to 5-6 times more efficient than other electric heat sources. You could get a multi-head split system, with one outdoor unit & two indoor units (living area & bedrooms), so you can zone your heating & cooling. The substantial saving made by not requiring a separate ducted heating system could be used for a solar PV system. Then your house could be heated & cooled for free during daylight hours. Re: Zoned Heating - Worth the upgrade? 7Aug 17, 2015 6:44 pm Thanks for all the suggestions Sounds like the zoned heating is the way to go, I will ask about upgrading to a better star rating. I will probably use the split system as a heater sometimes, depends on the weather and what I am doing in the house.
