Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 29, 2008 8:31 pm Hi,
Does anyone have any advise on putting in an air conditioning split unit system if you are living in an apartment? Body corporate says that no compressor unit may be placed on the balcony -- it has to go up onto the roof. Do you live in an apartment on the highest floor and have installed a compressor on the roof? please share your story. thanks Re: Installing airconditioning in apartments 2Jun 29, 2008 9:07 pm Can't help with the body corporate situation, but we installed a split at my mate's new apartment.
It was an absolute mongrel job. No A/C installer wanted to touch it - the place is prefab concrete walls, and the exterior walls are floor to ceiling glass. The balcony is concrete floor (tiled), walls & ceiling. We ended up negotiating with a sparky & air-con repairer, that we would do the bulk of the install, and they just do up the 'loose ends' We mounted it inside his enclosed balcony, and managed to get the pipes through the end of the bank of windows (in a gap in the outer framework - which required removal of all the windows in that bank, to expose, and then cut a slot in the outer frame where it ran up the wall. So the pipes & drain could now run from inside to out, on the surface (enclosed in plastic ductwork) and the drain emptied into the balcony floor drain. Then came the hard part wiring back to the fuse box! Luckily inside is a suspended ceiling - there's about 200mm gap between it & the floor above. We pulled out every downlight, and looped rope from one hole to the next, one at a time, the length of the apartment, then across to near the A/C. The sparky then used this as a pull rope to get the wiring through. It probably won't help you much in your case, but it shows just how difficult an apartment installation can be. Splits can be rn with the outside unit mounted above the indoor one - there's just a few installation steps needed to ensure the unit functions correctly. If you're on the top floor, then it shouldn't be too hard, but if you're a few below, then it will be either impossible (unless pipes were allowed for during construction) or very, very costly.
