Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation Re: Ducted air or 3 split air 2May 14, 2015 5:49 pm Well - it all depends ... We've got a Daikin System - with outlets in most rooms and a zoning system. We are also single story. It works really well - but in SEQ you don't need much to meet the needs. When we were in Canberra however a ducted system was ideal. However I often said I'd like a single unit in maybe the lounge/dining and the main bedroom. So I could use them when the big system was auto off. If you buy 2 or 3 singles it'll probably cost quite a bit too - and won't be as good. And - you may not have auto controls to the same degree (no pun intended). Nothing like getting home to a warm or cool house - when the system can be started on auto at a set time. Also getting up. It can depend on where you live - does it get very hot or cold ? I know people who got all single units - in almost every room. I thought it looked awful - but they liked it. Simple ducts in the roof - with a good system (eg Daikin) is worth it imo - but cost might also play a part. So - it depends ... Re: Ducted air or 3 split air 3May 14, 2015 6:03 pm Ducted advantages:

Re: Ducted air or 3 split air 4May 14, 2015 6:19 pm I would definitely recommend a ducted. While split can be handy for cooling certain small areas, if you set up the zoning properly in your ducted system, it essentially works better. Ducted will always use more electricity, but if you're worried about electricity use, I'd highly recommend investing in upgraded insulation in your roof and walls and designing your home to suit the Australian weather conditions, which encourages LESS use of ducted and split system air cons. But overall, I'd be paying for a ducted system. $395 Fixed Priced Landscape Plans for DA M: 0435 127 244 | W: bluegumdesign.com.au | E: info@bluegumdesign.com.au Residential | Commercial | Industrial Re: Ducted air or 3 split air 5May 15, 2015 12:46 am If you get ducted, and you wanted to get a dynamic zoning system for every room I would HIGHLY recommend that you get a unit with variable inside fan speed.. that is instead of "low"/"med"/"high" you get like 15 odd speeds.. examples are the daiken premium inverter and the advantage air. otherwise if you just want to run a single bedroom (e.g. master bedroom) or even 2 bedrooms the air rate is likely to be too high. Re: Ducted air or 3 split air 6May 15, 2015 9:22 am For me, multiple split systems is just what I want. I don't like ducted because unless you spend up big on them and get multiple returns and zoning, they can use a lot more electricity than splits do (except if you have all splits running at the same time, then splits will use more power). A big ducted system will normally require that you get three phase power put on. You would have been better to post this in the heating, cooling section than in here, as I've only just noticed your post now. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Ducted air or 3 split air 7May 15, 2015 5:21 pm We have ducted heating/cooling in our kitchen, meals, family and theatre room and split system heads in the bedrooms and downstairs man cave. We chose that setup for the following reasons... 1. Unless we have guests over we tend to watch a lot of TV in our bedroom. Running a split system to heat or cool the bedroom is more energy efficient than running a big ducted unit. Plus being able to individually control the temperatures in each bedroom is handy as often my step son won't want his room heated or cooled when we do. If we are entertaining in the downstairs man cave we can run just those split system units and not worry about heating or cooling the rest of the house. 2. We prefer the ducted look in the main living areas rather than having the unit on the wall. 3. Our house is large and we couldn't fit a ducted system that could do the entire house a with different temperature controls in each room that didn't cost a bomb! Plus even with individually temperature controlled rooms it is hard to get the temperature right. We have been in our house for 9 months and find this setup perfect for us. We haven't really used the ducted heater more than once yet but did use it for cooling a fair bit over summer. We found that the splits are much better at cooling down the house quickly though. As the nights are getting cooler we love that we can set the split system heater in the bedroom to run for an hour or so at bedroom before automatically shutting off.
