Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Mar 13, 2015 12:02 pm Hi there, Just wondering if anyone could tell me if it is common for duct's to disconnect in the ceiling? We have been in our place for almost 2 years and over the past year we have had the heating/cooling people return to continually reinstall the duct. Comment I've had from the tech is that due to the heat in the ceiling & weight of the duct from time to time the tape will give way. I have never heard anyone else complain about this issue before, unless they haven't noticed it yet. It looks like they will be returning again to fix one making it probably 4 visits over the past year. Is it possible that there may be an installation error causing this issue? Re: Ducted heater and add on refrigerative cooling - Duct is 2Mar 13, 2015 9:23 pm If the duct tape isn't applied correctly or enough tape used, then it's quite possible for the duct to disconnect. You'd really need to see the duct joins to assess if it's an issue from installation. An alternative to duct tape is to use duct cable ties. Re: Ducted heater and add on refrigerative cooling - Duct is 3Mar 14, 2015 10:27 am If it is the weight of the duct causing the tape joint to fail, then why aren't they providing additional support to that particular duct ? I do hope this repair work is being done under warranty, but if you are paying to get it fixed all the time, perhaps it is time a more permanent fix is made to it ? Poor workmanship and possibly poor materials used. There shouldn't be any joins mid run either. Look closely in this pic you can see it's all supported with blue strapping Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Ducted heater and add on refrigerative cooling - Duct is 11Mar 16, 2015 5:58 pm Or maybe they just want the roof to be nice and cool for next time they come back and fix it. I'll say it again...bloody flexible duct! Should only be used for the final branch off to the diffuser in my opinion. As for fix, looks like the spigot needs to be better supported, otherwise the weight is being taken by the taped joint. The ducting definitely has the blue support straps and when the ducts came off initially (at both zones) they used metal straps.
