Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation Re: Circulating heat from combustion fireplace 21May 02, 2016 9:48 am Hi there, Rehashing an old post. I have been looking at all our heating options for our next build (no gas), really loved the idea of hydronic but its soooo expensive, wish our country wasn't so behind in this technology!! So was thinking about the wood fire with ducting. We have a mate that bought a huge fire and he has a ducting vent in that room that then transfers the heat to the bedrooms. This will be his first winter coming up with it so he can't really give me an opinion just yet. Just wondering if anyone else has done this and how effective it is? We are in a cold part of victoria and I hate the cold so I wouldn't be happy if it doesn't keep the whole house warm. Thanks! Re: Circulating heat from combustion fireplace 22May 02, 2016 10:08 am Hydronic might be expensive up front, but it works brilliantly and as long as you choose an efficient heating plant (i.e. solar thermal or high efficiency heat pump) the ongoing costs are low. If you can integrate the heating plant with your domestic hot water as well so you only have one heating system then you can reduce overall build costs and running costs. It might be worth doing a cost-benefit analysis of how much the system would cost you over however many years you plan on living there. It might turn out that the hydronic system works out better - unless you have a cheap supply of firewood and don't mind going out in the cold to get it... By the time you buy and install the fireplace, insulated ductwork and fan system it's going to add up. When you think about it, the extra cost of going to a more sophisticated heating system added to your mortgage over 30 years, it's not going to be much. This is going to be our forever home so it sounds like it would pay itself off. I didn't realise you could run all your hot water requirements off the same system. Think I might need to make some phone calls! Hi all, My first post, we are building a house and can’t decide the layout of the lounge room. We have a large N/W facing window and are wanting to have a wood slow… 0 13719 No the fireplace doesn’t work. It’s been enclosed. I’m not sure what was removed, as it was done quite some time ago - well before what I can see with photos online… 2 11569 I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 3321 |
