Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jan 06, 2015 2:57 pm Hi all, I really want to have sarking installed in our new house, especially since it can get rather hot where we are building. My brother installed sarking when he did a re-roof on my parent's house and the difference is amazing. BUT I was quoted approx $4800 by the builder, at $20m2 supply and install. My brother said it costs $10m2 so that gives you an idea of the builder's markup. Unfortunately my partner and I are not keen to fork out that much money. We went to Home Base in Subiaco a few weeks ago and saw a display for spray foam insulation. I'm wondering if anyone has done this and how much does it cost? Is it effective? TIA Re: Spray foam insulation 2Jan 06, 2015 3:33 pm I think it's more popular in the US. I see it all the time on my new favourite show on Foxtel "Holmes Makes it Right". If you google it you'll find a few companies in Australia that do it. Re: Spray foam insulation 4Jan 06, 2015 10:48 pm It's used mainly in Australia commercially where a coolroom may be required and it's not viable for one to be fabbed up out of sandwich panels, they'll spray a room instead. You'll see them a bit in and on orchids or fruit farms. It seems to work well in a commercial refrigeration sense so no reason why it couldn't be used as insulation. I'm unsure of cost though. Re: Spray foam insulation 5Jan 07, 2015 1:46 pm I think $20m2 supplied and installed is reasonable given its not something that can be done retrospectively. I guess you're doing tiles? I had anticon added for under my colourbond roof by builder and was happy with price. Re: Spray foam insulation 6Jan 07, 2015 2:12 pm No we have chosen colourbond. I'm prepared to fork out the money (even though the total $ is a lot but yes $20 m2 isn't heaps) but my OH isn't. I think it's worth it, the difference in my parents house is amazing Re: Spray foam insulation 7Jan 07, 2015 2:14 pm Maybe I should secretly ask his dad to suggest it. He'll listen to his dad! Lol Re: Spray foam insulation 8Jan 07, 2015 2:51 pm Wellll, I think the spray foam is out. I called a supplier to get a rough estimate: soft foam at 150mm is approx $32-$33 per m2. 230m2 x $32 = $7,360! Re: Spray foam insulation 9Jan 07, 2015 9:18 pm Just think of the reduction in air conditioning bills. And it will lessen the noise of rain hitting the tin roof (even though I love the noise, the few decibels less makes a difference). Good luck selling it to OH, maybe try and catch him at a weak moment-that's how my wife got me on several items!! I'm afraid there's no way we could afford $7000 just for insulation given we need money to get other things done Oh no! I would use a can of expandable foam ( there are some that will take render) then cut it back and render over the top 1 4143 There is nothing in the various codes and standards that puts this requirement on the builder to do.
