We are having ceiling fans throughout our house to help with summer cooling and pushing warm air down from the ceiling in winter. Now tossing up between two colours - white Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ or brushed aluminium Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ in the living areas downstairs these will be plain fans. Upstairs (bedrooms) fans with lights. I'm a bit unhappy that the globe is a 100w halogen - but there are no decent looking fans that accept an energy saver globe. anyway - what do people recommend - white or silver? I figure white would make them blend in to the ceiling more. Or do they end up standing out? After 4 years - we're in! Re: Ceiling fans (again) 2Jun 16, 2008 11:36 am We've picked the same fans and have the same decision to make
I thought I read somewhere that you could use a CFL globe, so I'm hoping that this is correct! Hopefully someone will be able to confirm? Re: Ceiling fans (again) 3Jun 16, 2008 11:47 am I'm just about to start my research into this too stonecutter, so will be interested to see what you pick.
Without seeing them in person, my first instinct would be to go for aluminium in the living areas, for a nice clean contemporary look, and white in the bedrooms, to blend in. I *think* I read in one of your earlier posts you are having a contemporary look in your house? If not, then aluminium may not be the way to go. I am thinking of having a pair of chandeliers on either side of the fan in our kitchen/meals/living, but not sure if this will be too much what do others think? Who told you you couldn't put CFL lights in those ones? Would be interested to find this out too... donuts Re: Ceiling fans (again) 5Jun 16, 2008 12:09 pm hadn't thought of using white upstairs & silver downstairs - great thinking!
Our house is more of a contemporary style but with a warm family feel inside (lots of modern wood furniture) Apparently the globe is a long skinny halogen one (not like the downlights) - I suppose eventually manufacturers will get around to building an energy efficient substitute. This was the only fans that we could find that took an energy saving globe: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Not our style really! After 4 years - we're in! Re: Ceiling fans (again) 6Jun 16, 2008 12:43 pm No I'm not a fan ( ) of those ones either.
My parents have these ones - they are energy efficient bulbs, but placed sideways so you can fit a fairly flat shade over them. Mind you they are not happy with the light output, but I thought if you could get some stronger ones they might be ok. (I also don't like the fancy bits on these ones, I'd have plain blades) Without shade: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ With shade: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Ceiling fans (again) 7Jun 16, 2008 12:56 pm stonecutter1309 I'm a bit unhappy that the globe is a 100w halogen - but there are no decent looking fans that accept an energy saver globe. If you’re going to go with that particular model of fan, then it will be difficult to retrofit another lamp without some major surgery. Also remember these lamps require special care when replacing and get very hot. Brushed aluminium for living areas & white for bedrooms! I think either would be fine. A bit like my dilema tonight, white or chrome downlights Jo Re: Ceiling fans (again) 9Jun 16, 2008 10:55 pm Well, if you're a great housecleaner, go white. But we had white & they were a pain because one could always see dust on the leading edge of each blade. re colour - Personally I'd go white - but my advice - whatever you pick will get dirty so make sure they are not full of little areas to collect dust and IMO the rattan ones can get pretty grubby over the years. You might find a few ideas here re types and light options. http://www.universalfans.com.au/ceilingfans.htm http://www.universalfans.com.au/fanlights.htm Steve Re: Ceiling fans (again) 11Jun 17, 2008 5:57 am IMO white is OK if the fan is plain in style. However, if you install something funky & have spent considerable amount on it, I would ensure it was anything but white - IMO only Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Ceiling fans (again) 12Jun 17, 2008 8:59 am Southies Well, if you're a great housecleaner, go white. Works on bathroom exhaust fans as well.. Yak_Chat Whats brands are you looking at stonecutter.? We can get anything from Beacon Lighting - so the 2 brands they stock are Hunter Pacific and Lucci - which is their own brand. Strangely enough - the fan we are after is available in both brands and are 100% identical - down to the fittings and how the light looks. They appear to be made by the same company (though they wouldn't tell us that). Only diff is the Beacon in-house brand fan can be put in reverse for winter. It looks identical to "the grange" ones on the first link in your post I think we are going to have white in the bedrooms upstairs & silver downstairs in the living areas. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Ceiling fans (again) 14Jun 17, 2008 9:26 am Paula I'd even do it in the bedroom. You mean the fan right....?....back on topic we have a silver fan (came with house) and we like it. We wanted remote control fans with lights attached to make it easier for my Dad (retired eleco) to install for us. We looked at Bunnings and Beacon - they had none under a couple of hundred dollars.
We ended up going to our little local Home Hardware shop that had some with remotes and lights for $100 each. They even have dimmer settings on the remote (great for babies and not wanting to turn the light on full bore in the middle of the night!) and 3 speeds for the fans. And they have reversible blades for winter warmth vs summer cooling. We only bought white because they were for our bedrooms so not sure whether they came in other colours or not. So shop around - go into hardware shops (and not just the local Bunnings!) as well as light shops. You may be surprised. Just looked and pretty sure that they were Heller brand http://www.homehardware.com.au/home/pro ... ductID=190 Says they come in either white or Cherrywood. Re: Ceiling fans (again) 20Jun 17, 2008 12:51 pm I emailed Hunter Pacific earlier in the week to see if they are releasing a fan/light that is CFL -
Quote: We are in the process of developing a Compact Fluorescent light for our fans. These will be available to purchase in the near future. Then I asked about fitting lights to existing fans: Quote: They most certainly can. However you do need to keep in mind that you can only purchase the Concept fan with or wothout a light - it can't be changed over later on if you change your mind. The Concept 2 however is purchased as the fan alone, and the light kits are sold as a seperate accessory. You are able to fit a light kit on at alater stage with the Concept 2.
