Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Dec 29, 2014 11:40 pm Hi All Our Evap aircon seems to just be blowing ambient air temps. Not cooling at all. We have used this in past years and its been ok (bearable, has some cooling effect) til about 35 degrees on a Perth day. We had it serviced a few weeks ago and using it all this past week and half as temps crept up to 30 plus, we have not been getting any cool air except for night . And thats with me keeping all blind and curtains closed, and also using a pedestal fan in lounge. I'm going to call the service guys back tomorrow as I'm wanting them to recheck their work. Before I get all cocky - is anyone able to offer suggestions of what it might be? We paid for a new float/level thing so that it could actually fill up properly so in theory I'm assuming it should be filling properly with cool water, and not only half filling. They said the pads would need replacing next year. How do the pads affect cooling? Filters were cleaned during service and apparently ok. Any tips or advice would be appreciated!!!! Thanks Re: Evap Aircon Not Working 2Dec 30, 2014 9:01 am There is a small pump that pumps water from the tank to the top of the pads. The pump inlet might be blocked or the pump may have seized over winter. Check that this pump is working. It will require getting onto the roof and possibly removing one of the panels to see if the other pads are wet. That's basically all they do, just recirculate the air around the house without refrigeration. If it is already a humid day then you possibly won't find it cooling you down. As Beetaloo said, chances are is that a water pump has failed or a water inlet to the pump is blocked, and you'll have to get up there to check it out. Check that the tap on the water line feeding the a/c is open. This may have been closed during servicing. As previously mentioned, the pump may have been working prior to or even during the service and may have failed in the interim. Or it wasn't working at the time of service and this wasn't picked up on, which would be pretty poor form from your service tech. The problem is, unless you knew it wasn't working prior to the service you have no recourse. When you say you have the blinds and curtains closed, I'm assuming you still have some windows open? Evap won't work properly without sufficient airflow. Try only opening windows on the shaded side of the house and preferably away from any hot breezes. The pads ARE the cooling element. If these have degraded to a point where they no longer absorb water properly then the evaporative effect may be reduced. Covering the roof unit during winter will help prevent the pads holding water for long periods. Granted, the pads are constantly wet during use, but the water is being constantly replenished also. There is no recirculation of air in an evaporative system. It works most effectively by creating a slight pressure differential between the inside and outside air, preventing hot air from flowing back into the house. Too many open windows, or windows in an unfavourable position may allow hot air into the house. Finding a good balance is the key, you should be feeling cool air flowing out of every opening. Humidity can also be a factor, I find that if the weather is more humid then greater airflow (fan speed) will give you more perceptible cooling effect and a slight reduction in that "swampy" feeling. Unless the humidity is 100% you will still get some cooling effect. Good luck with it all! I had a similar issue with my fridge not too long ago. It wasn't the same model, but the symptoms were pretty much the same: the compressor would start and then stop… 3 7531 The unit normally clips into a metal plate screwed to the wall, either plate is not flush, or unit not hooked in and could be hanging from the pipes partly, either might… 2 15791 Okay sorry silly me, my wife has solves the mystery for me. It’s because the labels on the ports are all wrongly positioned by the builder hence it confuses me. 2 1379 |
