Split Systems

Hi guys

Not sure if this is the right spot. Please move if not

I am building a house and I want a split system. The one they include is onsen brand and is 3.4kw and covers 13-27m2
The spot I will be putting it in is in the meals\living area which is 32m2

So I was going to upgrade to either
4.85kw covers 20-40m2
or
6.7kw covers 30-55m2

Id prefer the bigger one to help cool down the other rooms

What you guys think of this brand and my choice?

It's a brand sold through a certain trade wholesaler...

They're all also non inverters when compared to other big name and otherwise brands.

You may find that going with the 6.7kW one could result in the compressor short cycling due to being oversized for the space. It doesn't matter as much with an inverter split system but these fixed speed compressors are either on or off. The constant on and off will result in greater power consumption as the compressor will draw start up current everytime it starts and that's the biggest cost of a split system.

I'd be telling them to remove the AC and get it done after build.

Onsen? Never heard of it.
Fixed speed? No thanks. There is a reason you can't buy a fixed speed ducted unit in Australia anymore (although builders seem to be able to bypass it somehow, possibly as it is not sold as retail).

Look at a higher quality brand, it will last you a lot longer. IE: Daikin, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

I only need 2.5kW ones, so was going to pick 4 of these and 1 3.5kW for the lounge.

Competitive power consumption, reading pretty good reviews, 5 years parts warranty and 10 years compressor warranty. And can supposedly control them using an app over the phone. So turn them on before I leave from work

Samsung supposedly has a 15% cash back...and a mate grabbed them with some more discount off JB-Hifi last week, trying to get details off him.

Actually, Harvey Norman is giving a $80 Eftpos card for the 3.5kW system. So that's free $320 Mrs can spend during boxing day to get a new vacuum cleaner.

Thanks for all this info shadow! I've been inundated with other things on our build I haven't locked in a model for our house, just settled on the evaporative and placed a deposit so that goes first. Sometimes I wish money was easier to come by! Stupid impulsive buys

Spoke to the builder, they dont use Onsen anymore, they use York, ( supposedly a better product he said)

But I spoke to an air-con guy and he said thats another 3rd tier brand

Anyone know much about this York brand? If its crap quality again I will wait and do it myself

Not any better i'm afraid. Better, but i still wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
Whilst this is ducted, it should give you a good indication.
*edit* cant post link here. So google "york air conditioner review", and one of the bigger "review" websites will give you a better idea on how average/bad they are.

York is owned by Johnson Controls Inc. I've seen and worked on their equipment in commercial and industrial applications from mini splits (high wall and ceiling cassette) to larger ducted splits and package units all the way up to industrial flooded chillers. They like all the other brands which are more known for their larger equipment will have their good and bad points. They're no different to McQuay or Carrier brand units.

I'd personally go with a name brand unit myself but where price has been sensitive have offered people Midea or Teco brand units.

Why not supply the builder your own unit and have it installed with the build if that's an option?

Dont think my builder will install brands not supplied by their suppliers

I spoke to a friend of mine who sells air-cons and he said not to use them

so Ill get my own later or as the house is being built

he said Fujitsi - Hitachi all Daikin all them Jap brands are good, and LG are really good to but just dont have the name yet from those other ones

My A/C guy uses Panasonic pretty much exclusively, although he will install other brands requested by his customers.

So stick to the name brands if you care, such as Panasonic, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Samsung and you should be right.

We need to consider a few things first. What size you need-
0-300 Sq Feet a 9000 btu would be best for you.
300-500 Sq Feet a 12000 Btu 1 Ton Duct-less Heat Pump Air Conditioner would be best for you.
500-800 Sq Feet a 18000 Btu 1.5 Ton Duct-less Heat Pump Air Conditioner
may be best for you.
800-1200 Sq Feet a 24000 btu 2 Ton Duct-less Heat Pump Air Conditioner
would be best for your application.
we also have 3 ton Duct-less Heat Pump Air Conditioner, and larger.

Now what size Duct-less Heat Pump Air Conditioner Line set do you need? Well just how far apart do you plan to mount the inside unit away from the outside unit? Depending on this answer you can choose systems that have 10', 16', or 25'. Anything larger than that you would need your HVAC contractor to just add on what you need they sell most of the items you need at Home Depot or Lowes , Its often cheaper if they provide it at cost rather than buying it a full retail online.

Now the most important! What is your budget? Since we carry so many different brands you can pick and choose a system that may be in more of your price range. Just be sure to factor in the above two variables when making your choice.

I recommend efficient and economical brands like: Midea, AirCon

We work in metric here in Australia mate... not everyone is going to be able to convert on the cuff.

Wow you troll up a thread from 4 years ago, I'm sure the OP has has his house built and a split system of his choice installed by now. Or he settled for the builder's grade split system.

Also refrigerated air conditioning is a licensed trade here so no diy.

And then you start a thread asking whether to install a split system or not and the benefits...
