Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Sep 28, 2014 2:15 pm Hi H1, I'm after some suggestions on how to heat and cool a new area from an extension we are about to start on. Our current house (https://www.flickr.com/photos/jesscar/12111458053/ ) has ducted evaporative cooling, a 40yo old gas wall furnace in the front room and basic old insulation (not sure what R rating it would be). We are in Perth so the inside of our house can get up to around 33 and down to around 12 with no heating/cooling turned on. We are getting a flat roof extension adding 50sqm and turning one of our current living areas (with 1 evap duct) into an open plan area with another room attached (plan here https://www.flickr.com/photos/jesscar/15219812561/). The walls will be approx R2.5 and roof I think R3.5 with an anticon layer. Due to the flat roof adding more ducts is not an option. So, what would people recommend for heating and cooling this new space? I was originally thinking ceiling fans with a gas log fire, but they turned out to be $7k-9k so I was thinking perhaps one large split system might be better. I'm after the most economical option when you factor in ongoing costs as well as initial cost. WDYT?
