Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 04, 2008 7:45 pm Anyone here getting a fireplace installed in their new house? Did you do it fr looks or for heating? What's the brand?
We're thinking of getting one if it fits the budget. It will be for heating but it should look good as well. It will be a feature in the dining/family. Thanks. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: Anyone getting a fireplace? 3Jun 05, 2008 3:03 pm Nice. Can it warm a big area in the house? Can you pm me approx price. Thanks \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: Anyone getting a fireplace? 4Jun 05, 2008 3:56 pm We would love one - but no where to put it!
I plan on building a nice outdoor fire pit instead for roasting marshmallows. This is the one our builder has in the display home: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Love it! http://www.thefireplace.com.au/index.htm#wood I currently have two closed wood heaters in my house, but nothing beats a real open fireplace. I'm ripping out one wood heater and putting in a traditional fireplace. Yes, it's far less efficient than a 'doored' heater, but it has way more character. Depends what you're after. As for environmental issues, wood heaters being powered from a renewable resources are supposedly among the best options. On the other hand they do output quite a bit of coarse particulate matter. In Tasmania (where I am) what really irritates me is the big push to eliminate wood heating *simultaneous* with a BIG rise in electricity costs. The government can't have it both ways. We're getting a provision for a fireplace in our front lounge room, with us to supply and install later on, when we can afford it (which means it's therefore probably going to be an empty whole for quite a while !). As it's just a small room and we're having ducted heating anyway, I'm hoping we can get away with spending <$3k for a gas log heater. Re: Anyone getting a fireplace? 15Jun 15, 2008 10:05 am What provisions did they have to make for you donuts? Did they just run gas and cap it behind the plaster? Or have they left you a recess? We were looking to do the same thing but are a little dubious about the charge to do so. Re: Anyone getting a fireplace? 16Jun 15, 2008 10:15 am mikkyG Did they just run gas and cap it behind the plaster? Or have they left you a recess? Nothing's been done yet mikkyG, but I think this is what they'll do. The wall it's going on backs on to the garage and the flue (or whatever) will jut out a bit into that room. (Plans are on my thread at https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=7297 if you want to have a squiz) The provision is costing us $1000. How much does your builder want to charge you? Re: Anyone getting a fireplace? 17Jun 15, 2008 10:28 am We are using PD also but we haven’t had the conversation yet. My naivety is wearing off and 350(ish) is what I expected they'd want to charge .
Is there some way you can get a cost (even if its only ballpark) from the builder? Living interstate we are finding it a little difficult to guess what’s in budget and what’s out, this is perhaps one really good example of that, and we are only going to have one crack at it when we go down to get the final price. If we are too low we might have missed out on some nice stuff and if too high we we'll be madly crossing off inclusions Re: Anyone getting a fireplace? 18Jun 15, 2008 11:10 am Ask away! You might as well? Also, as I was typing what it cost me, I thought, gee that's actually probably quite expensive, but back when we were agreeing to all these things we had no idea what should cost what! So who knows, I'm probably getting ripped off!
Can't you contact your sales person prior to going down for your appointment to ask the cost of things? Surely they cannot expect you to decide whether or not you can afford every upgrade within the one meeting? We have a large N/W facing window and are wanting to have a wood slow… 0 13724 No the fireplace doesn’t work. It’s been enclosed. I’m not sure what was removed, as it was done quite some time ago - well before what I can see with photos online… 2 11584 I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 3335 |
