Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 26, 2014 7:52 pm I am looking into putting in a couple of split systems to help use get through the summer. However, the walls that one of the systems will go on half limited space between the wall and the fence, approximately 800mm. Given most systems need 100mm between wall and unit and the units are usually about 300mm deep this only leaves about 400mm clearance between the unit and the fence. I am lead to believe most manufacturers state a 1m clearance between unit and obstruction thus there is an issue here. The way I see it I have a few options: 1) Mount it with the 400mm clearance and hope that the system does not overheat (I assume this is the reason for the 1m clearance requirement). 2) I could mount as high up the wall as possible given the eaves and top clearance requirements to help allow extra air flow over the level of the fence. 3) I could look into mounting on the roof. Any idea how much extra this would cost? 4) Put the outside unit on the other side of the house where there is great clearance, obviously this will result in a much greater pipe run. Can people give me opinions and advice on which options would be the best? Thanks in advance Re: Air conditioning placement 2Aug 27, 2014 11:19 am You don't say which side of the house you are talking about. If it was in the Western or Northern side I'd mount them up high to both get shading from the sun from the eaves and to increase distance from the fence ( I presume a standard 12-1500 high side fence ) ? I have even seen people have a shading device hung from the eaves to help keep aircon units cooler. You also need to think of which side of the house will get more pedestrian traffic and mount it on the other side. Stewie Re: Air conditioning placement 3Sep 03, 2014 12:04 am The reason for the 1m clearance is to prevent the air pulled off the condenser coils being recirculated back through the system. The last 2 systems I installed had both outdoor units wall mounted up high with 150mm from the eave to the top of the unit. At that height, the air was just blowing over the fence. The 2 outdoor units were located on a west facing wall. Re: Air conditioning placement 4Sep 06, 2014 10:37 pm If space is limited you may have issues, roof mounting may be the go and should not cost too much more if they are small units. Like mentioned the issue is the hot air isn't able to escape fast enough and builds up around the unit which is then sucked back through the condensing unit which will lower efficiency.
