Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 12, 2014 12:19 pm Hi guys, For those of you that have gas log fires, I'd love to hear what I should be looking for and avoiding when it comes to choosing one. I want one that looks cosy as well as great for standing in front of to get warm. If it could heat extra rooms that would be a bonus but not essential. Pictures would be bonus points. Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. What's good and what's n 2Aug 12, 2014 12:38 pm This thread here viewtopic.php?f=20&t=42172 has some input from people who have installed them. We don't have one as yet but in our upcoming build we will be having two Heat'nGlo gas log fires - one upstairs and one down. I have a few clients that have installed either the H'nG or one of the Real Flame models and they swear by them. One thing I like about the H'nG is that they draw the air in from the outside to use in the fire as well as expel the waste gases outside. Another thing to look at is the remote functions and whether it is easy to set a temperature that the fire maintains. Some models from other manufacturers have fans that were quite noisy when we looked at them in the showrooms. Stewie Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. They have a better star rating but I don't think they look as good. I really like the look of the Lopi ones though. Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. What's good and what's n 4Aug 12, 2014 6:32 pm Not concerned with the cost of gas ? The only reason I ask is we just got our qtly gas a/c today, 2 adults, gas cooktop, gas hotwater, $100. Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. What's good and what's n 5Aug 13, 2014 12:28 pm That's not too bad jj1. Our quarterly gas bill came in a week or so ago and for two adults and a teenager with gas hot water and gas heating ours was around $135. Stewie Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. What's good and what's n 6Aug 14, 2014 12:21 pm It's the electricity that kills us. This bill was almost $700. Our gas is normally about $60 for our family of 5. Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. What's good and what's n 7Aug 14, 2014 6:01 pm Ouch...! our last elec a month ago $150 (also have solar which helps). Both gas and elec usage this time about double the last qtr, and similar to same time last year, but we are both at home and it is winter ?? edit: just had a look at your blog...WOW....great transformation/renovation, I raise my hat to you both. Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. What's good and what's n 8Aug 14, 2014 9:16 pm Thanks jj1. I don't know if it is worth getting solar. Should we? Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. What's good and what's n 9Aug 14, 2014 10:50 pm Cheers Bella Firstly I Am no expert.....So, my observation is, unless someone is home all day every day (we're retired) I would seriously question the logic of solar with the current costs. There is no money to be made as a small scale electricity producer i.e. feeding into the grid on a sunny day. Our elec. company pays us 6c per kWh. Whereas we pay them 12c or 20c or 50c depending on T.O.U. It therefore only becomes beneficial if we can use our own solar power to run our machines (washer,dryer,A/C etc) that way we avoid (or reduce at least), having to pay so much to import from the grid to run the machines. If there is no one at home to run the machines......!! I can't see a way around it if there is no one at home during the daylight hours to take advantage of the power being produced. Hope you can follow my thinking. edit: have a look at the "pvoutput" link below which is our daily electricity summary. You can see the days we have been running the A/C ? The $ figures are fairly accurate. Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. What's good and what's n 10Aug 18, 2014 2:45 pm That is very interesting. I will do some more research. Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. What's good and what's n 12Aug 19, 2014 10:21 am I had a Fitzroy cannon for 15 years, no trouble ever with it, its not quite as good has the archer gas logs, but at the time, despite this I went for Fitzroy cannon, and I know others who have had a archer, but have had a lot more maintenance issues, this time I went for a American made lopi gas log, iwould narrow it down to a couple of brands, then google for owners of these brands, you will quickly get an idea of reliability and useage, then go into multiple outlets for opinions. Re: Talk to me about gas log fires. What's good and what's n 13Jul 27, 2015 11:46 am Just to update. We got the Lopi and it is perfect! Getting a lot of use this winter. Have you any idea how much it costs to use for a day for example ? So far the most I have costed our A/C from about 7am-6pm has been around $8-$10. And that depends on solar availability as well. We have some gas outlets, and I often wonder about the economics of installing a heater.
