Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 22, 2014 2:54 pm Hi, new member, please go easy on me. I have a new house close to starting construction. The specs for insulation state R5.0 batts for the ceiling. Do I need to consider sisalation as well? Will it give me any further advantages? The roof will be pitched, clad with zincalume. Cheers Re: Do I need Sisalation AND Batts in roof? 2Jul 25, 2014 1:42 pm By sisalation you mean the foil wrap to walls, or to roof (sarking)? I thought it was standard to have sisalation to the walls, but Sarking is not standard. for the (should be minimal) cost, i would have it added. It does help and has an R rating of R1. If you mean sarking then it is something you need to think on. Generally they recommend something like Anticon under metal roofs, but Sarking is available as well. Anticon is an insulating blanket with a foil layer. This provides you with some additional insulation properties (it's rated at R1.3 i believe), noise insulation and condensation protection along with reducing radiant heat. Is it a requirement? No. Plenty of houses don't have anything. Personally i think it is worth the extra to go with at least Sarking, but Anticon isn't much more and has many benefits. Read up here: http://www.bradfordinsulation.com.au/Pr ... ticon.aspx Its hard/imposible to install after the roof is put on so do have a good think about it. Personally; i am having light duty anticon installed (in QLD). In a colder climate not so much but sarking is still a good idea. Stewie Re: Do I need Sisalation AND Batts in roof? 4Jul 25, 2014 2:45 pm Sisalation in addition to reflecting radiant heat also acts as a vapour barrier preventing condensation on the underside of a metal roof from dropping onto the ceiling below. I would use either Anticon or an insulated roof blanket. By doing this it would be possible to reduce the R value (& cost) of the ceiling insulation and avoid problems of condensation dripping onto the ceiling/insulation. Stramit's installation guide, recommends that a roofing blanket be installed in domestic installations. The reflective foil (including foil backed roof blankets) prevent heat from the roof radiating back into the roof space resulting in a cooler roof space in summer. Sarking can be difficult to install as it is very light and blows around easily. One needs a calm day to install it. A 75mm (or 50mm) foil backed roofing blanket is easier to manage if there is some wind. If the roof is steel framed, then an insulating roof blanket (or alternative insulating material) must be installed to prevent thermal bridging between a metal roof and the steel roof frames. Re: Do I need Sisalation AND Batts in roof? 5Oct 10, 2014 9:38 am Yes all homes should have sisalation (sarking) and insulation, they both have different purposes sisalation for condensation and insulation for its thermal qualities. Many building companies don’t install sisalation unless its for BAL Rating compliance as a cost saving, all of our homes have sisalation and its good building practice. Found the answer.
