He's right. Any vents should be to the outside not into the roof cavity otherwise moisture and condensation can be an issue. Ducting extraction fans would not compromise your sound or thermal insulation values by much at all. There are some specialised extraction fans for this purpose but you would also be in for an expensive surprise. Gravity closing flaps are a cheaper option and nearly as good. Regarding your windows, you'd have to weigh up the benefits of what you want the most. In the window and door section there are some comparisons of what insulates better.
