Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 25, 2008 1:41 am Hello all - first post - this looks like a great forum...
Am living in the UK at the moment but my query relates to a rental property I have in Melbourne (which I plan to return to next year) The house is small (10m x 15m), old (1920s) and weatherboard. In summer it gets disgustingly hot - up to 32-33 degrees inside. Really unbearable. We had the (corrugated iron) roof completely redone last year and beefed up the insulation in the process, so I'm sure this has helped a bit (but as I'm not living there I can't tell for sure) - but on the whole I'm sure it's still a hot box. I'd like to put in some cooling for when I come back.. I've read numerous threads regarding evaporative Vs refrigerative cooling - and it seems to come largely down to personal choice. In principle I like the idea of evaropative - but my concern is if we go down the evaporative path and find out it's not enough to keep my hot box cool, that we will have wasted significant $$$ ... Given the size and age of the house and given that it's in Melbourne - can anyone with experience of evaporative cooling offer some insight? Do you think it might be enough? Thanks in advance... Re: Small house in Melbourne 2May 26, 2008 10:01 pm Hi bp, welcome to the forum.
In regards to the comparison between refridgerated and evaporative, i suppose it depends on how much money you want to spend and secondly what sort of cooling you ultimately want? If you like keeping windows/doors open and like the feel of a breeze then go with evap, but if you want guaranteed cold in the house and dont mind spending the cash, then go refridgerated. Either way Melb doesn't get that many really scorching days every year so it really depends on what you prefer! Good Luck Re: Small house in Melbourne 3May 26, 2008 10:06 pm Why do you think it gets hotr - western sun on the walls, courtyard that heats up etc etc.
I know living in the UK that these sorts of things are far from your mind - have you thawed from winter yet But it's normally more than just insulation and cooling thats required. Personally as P says - I'd be thinking evaprative but what style of heating do you have as well? Is a reverse cycle needed? Steve Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room. There is a hallway/entry that is never used, so was thinking this could be an option.
