Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 04, 2014 4:34 pm Hi All,
Can someone inform me which option is the most cost effective to heat up a home? (only people with experience or you're 100% sure) I've been told by many "professional/sales" people that Gas is much cheaper to run by far, but it doesn't confirm with me calculations, unless gas offers a different type of warmth? I get charged 1.9cents/MJ for gas and 25cents/KWH for electricity. Braemar 20kw THM520 uses 88MJ/Hr = 88x0.19=$1.67/hr. http://www.braemar.com.au/heating/ducte ... ifications Mits 20kw PEA-RP170WJA has COP of 3.33, which uses 20/3.33=6kw, therefore 5x0.25=$1.50/hr. http://www.mitsubishielectric.com.au/Mi ... oning.html Link below shows running cost comparison from Sustainability of VIC that Electric is cheaper: They uses different traffic, if you put in my rates, electric is much cheaper. http://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/se ... ning-costs Am I right to say electric ducted reverse cycle system is cheaper to heat up a home? Thanks! Re: Heating Running Cost - Gas Vs. Elecrtic Duted systems 2May 04, 2014 5:14 pm Reverse cycle air conditioning has been proven to be the cheapest most efficient form of heating a home. If you are using bottled gas, forget about it. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Blog : http://bandlnewhomebuild.blogspot.com H1 thread : viewtopic.php?f=38&t=68283 . Re: Heating Running Cost - Gas Vs. Elecrtic Duted systems 3May 04, 2014 6:18 pm I'm keen to know the answer to this too for Victoria. I can pay $8500 for a Panasonic ducted reverse cycle inverter, or $9,500 for a 5.6 star Braemar gas ducted unit with Braemar add-on cooling. I was quoted ~$13,000 for a Brivis gas ducted and add-on cooling setup. I'm leaning towards reverse cycle, particularly as the inverter cooling will be cheaper to run than an add-on unit (I assume?), and the media keeps reporting that gas prices will explode this year due to gas now being sold to Asia. Based on the Nominal AEER, it's comparable to Inverter Systems. http://www.braemar.com.au/heating-and-c ... ifications I too am deciding between the 2 systems...Hope more experienced people will reply. Re: Heating Running Cost - Gas Vs. Elecrtic Ducted Systems 5May 19, 2014 9:58 pm The answer depends where your live, in particular the over night temperatures. The quoted COP of 3.33 for reverse cycle is based on an ambient design temperature. (this could be say as high as 15 ~ 20C). Most domestic air-conditioning systems are designed and optimised for summer air-conditioning, the heating cycle is a bonus but the heating cycle can fail at very low outside temperatures. At much lower temperatures, for example 4deg C or sub zero, the COP drops away. It could be below unity, especially if the outside condensing unit ices up. If your house is in a frost hollow (i.e.Canberra) or in an area that regularly drops below zero overnight , then gas is the way to go. If however your house is in a temperate area (for example near the coast) then reverse cycle heat pumps would be better and you get summer time air-conditioning. Heating Running Cost - Gas Vs. Elecrtic Ducted Systems 6Jun 18, 2014 10:00 pm Look at hydronic panel heating. It costs approx $1000 per panel installed so depending on your house size might be an economical option. If you don't have gas then look at electric underfloor heating and solar panels. Use the daytime sun to heat the thermal mass of your slab and minimise the amount of electricity you use at night I might add electric hydronic can be expensive to run so set it up right Re: Heating Running Cost - Gas Vs. Elecrtic Ducted Systems 8Jun 18, 2014 10:06 pm Fair enough. But can I ask why? Was it cost? I'm putting in gas hydronic and refrigerated AC I will at least have the luxury that if the hydronic craps itself I can switch on the ducted system as a backup. Re: Heating Running Cost - Gas Vs. Elecrtic Ducted Systems 10Jun 18, 2014 10:55 pm Wow that's a lot of panels your adding. 12k for the ducted reverse sounds cheap. Wouldn't even consider the gas+evap. Our summers are getting hotter...can't think of anything worse than sitting inside a house that's 30deg Re: Heating Running Cost - Gas Vs. Elecrtic Ducted Systems 11Jun 22, 2014 10:31 am When we lived in Canberra - natural gas was best. I'm told it is not the same with bottles. It seemed "warmer" and didn't "freeze" on cold mornings. Cost may have been similar - but if I could afford it I'd have both - and use the air/con split for summer and the NG heating for winter. BUT - electricity is cheaper in the ACT than some states. Re: Heating Running Cost - Gas Vs. Elecrtic Ducted Systems 14Jan 19, 2022 10:01 am I have read that Gas heating works out cheaper than RC heating Gas costs around $0.017/MJ, while electricity is roughly $0.069/MJ ($0.25/kWh). If you go with a 6-star-rated gas heater, you're paying roughly ~$0.019/MJ for the actual heat at 90% efficiency (http://www.elgas.com.au/blog/449-star-ratings-for-gas-heaters-gas-wall-furnaces-a-gas-fireplaces) The RC efficiency, however, is around ~3-4x the energy input assuming 20c ambient temp outside, so you're really paying ~$0.17 - $0.023/MJ for the heat. but could be paying $0.07/MJ in winter night (even if you had invested in clean Solar) So all things equal, the costs are roughly comparable today unless you live in temperate climate cities. What the future will bring is anyone's guess, but of course it's easier to produce some of your own electricity & use batteries than using gas with emissions footprint:) Personally I had to choose to go with 6 start Braemar Heater with extra air version with $2k spent on ducting upgrade so I could add a refrigerated Add-on cooling to same ducting for hotter days (thanks to humankind for Global warming ) 2 6192 Hi all I am looking to run a water line under my concrete footpath which is directly next to my home, was seeing if this is possible without cutting the entire section… 0 20182 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
