Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation Re: Recommended Ceiling and Wall Insulation upgrades 2Feb 20, 2014 6:23 pm If you want R5 batts in the walls you are going to have a special wall construction as the batts require 240mm thickness in the wall frames. Could be very expensive! R2.7 batts are about as high as you can go with standard wall frames. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Recommended Ceiling and Wall Insulation upgrades 3Feb 21, 2014 9:54 pm I've decided to go with R3.5 in ceiling and R1.5 in walls (as mentioned due to wall framing sizes). Due to diminishing returns i couldn't justify the price difference. Also getting roof sarking (medium), so hopefully that will reduce my energy bills. (I am Brisbane based, so might be worth it in other areas). My Noosa 23 Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72782 Re: Recommended Ceiling and Wall Insulation upgrades 4Feb 22, 2014 8:55 pm Thought it might be better to crash this thread than start a new one along the same lines. Just planning our new build of a 30sq single story home and am a great believer in good insulation to keep heat in or out(growing up in a cold country does that for you!!). We are having R1.5 bats added to the wall and were considering upgrading the ceiling batts to R4.1. The quote we received from the builder for the walls seemed quite reasonable, just in excess of $800, however the quote for the ceiling bats was a little steep in my opinion( over $1100 to upgrade above living areas and garage only). I have 2 questions if someone would be good enough to help us out. Am I being unjust in my believing the ceiling quote is a little excessive given that it was for above the living areas only. Would we be better ensuring that the whole ceiling, including those above the alfresco, garage and porch are insulated to R2.5 at build (wouldn't the lack of insulation in these areas contribute to the loft space temp rising?) and then increasing the depth of insulation after completion if we feel it's needed. Re: Recommended Ceiling and Wall Insulation upgrades 5Feb 24, 2014 3:07 pm The best way to determine any benefits from including extra R values is to have a Thermal Assessor run your design through the software and give predicted heating and cooling figures for differing scenarios. As a broad overview I would say that reflective foil to the underside of roofing, R4.0 Ceiling insulation, R2.5 wall insulation should be looked at as a base level (depending upon location). RFL to the underside of the roofing is very cost effective. Depending upon the layout, if not insulating the ceilings of garages, the dividing walls to the 'home' should be looked at as insulating these may reduce heating / cooling loads overall. Re: Recommended Ceiling and Wall Insulation upgrades 6Feb 27, 2014 11:07 pm Thanks for that. We Live on the Sunny coast so will probably reconsider our plans. Definitely going for RFL and additional wall insulation as these both more difficult to do post build. Now to decide on cost/comfort benefit of increased bats! Found the answer.
