Hi I'm going to put Ducted Refrig cooling in our new build and wanted to get your opinions if its better to get a 3 phase or 240V system.
Are there benefits of running a 3phase system?
Thanks,

It does not cost much to run 3 phase to the meterbox based on what my builder is charging me to do so. Not sure this helps. Re: 3 Phase or 240V 4Feb 03, 2014 12:49 pm I've looked at it but not gone any further with houses. My houses haven all been high star rated so haven't needed a big air conditioner. The flat I'm currently renting has 3 phase because it has an instantaneous electric water heating system. Re: 3 Phase or 240V 6Feb 03, 2014 2:47 pm I personally would not go for 3 phase over single phase (230v) unless I had a real need for it. I don't have a need for 3 phase, as I will never waste my money on a ducted a/c, as split systems work out cheaper to run overall, as you're only cooling the rooms that you need at the time. My MiG welder is only single phase, and I'll never have the need to run a 280A welder. To the OP, if you can go to split system a/c rather than the big ducted system, then go single phase... it can make it easier to go solar later on (not many good solar PV inverters available for 3 phase, SMA is one). Re: 3 Phase or 240V 8Feb 03, 2014 2:55 pm Crazyk Oh so there begs a question, if I get a solar system can I run my 3 phase AC off the electricity generated? I'm sure it will, but you'll stick be sucking from the mains if your inverter isn't big enough. And chances are that even in the best of sun times, you'll still be sucking a fair bit from the mains still. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: 3 Phase or 240V 10Feb 03, 2014 5:57 pm There are systems such as actron that allow each room to be controlled individually. If you have many rooms split systems may need many compressor units to be mounted. Re: 3 Phase or 240V 12Feb 03, 2014 6:21 pm I am also getting the actron but need two units to ensure correct cooling. I have opted for the Ultima with wifi enabled which is pretty pricey but i like the ability to go down to one room. I guess its each to his own on preference and the splits do add up quickly if you need bigger units and many rooms. Re: 3 Phase or 240V 14Feb 03, 2014 6:37 pm Okay, I'm confused by the title of the thread. Surely 3 phase is 240volts still?! Otherwise none of our appliances would work!? Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: 3 Phase or 240V 17Feb 03, 2014 6:49 pm EmyN Okay, I'm confused by the title of the thread. Surely 3 phase is 240volts still?! Otherwise none of our appliances would work!? 3 phase is 400v single phase is 230v If you don't know what you have, chances are is that you have single phase, because if you had 3 phase you would have made a special effort to get it (not all that much effort really). If you have 2 wires from the pole, it is single phase (active and neutral) If you have 4 wires from the pole, it is three phase ( 3 actives and one neutral) Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. We are having three phase because the electrical fit out company said we went over the amount of electrical circuits recommended for single phase. We had a suspicion they were telling fibs to make more commission or something but it seems to have been backed up from several sources. It was explained to me as two power "IN" cables/circuits so it could draw a lot more power from the "grid" and handle a lot more load or somesuch. I think they tried to dumb it down too much really and ended up glossing over how it actually works hahaha. So... will normal plug-in things work then?!! Down to phone chargers and TVs?? :s Baffling. Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: 3 Phase or 240V 20Feb 03, 2014 7:37 pm To have it set up as 3 phase will give you 415 volts out of a point. It would be rare for a house to use this. You can have 3 phase circuits which will mean 3 separate circuits of 240 volt. This would mean you run you LARGE aircon on one circuit, perhaps all other power on another circuit, electric hot water, and anything else on another. It just means you have less chance of overloading a particular circuit.
