Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 01, 2013 8:02 pm Hi there, Some months ago we had a Brivis ducted heating system installed in our house - an external unit that is fitted next to our house and with the return air duct mounted in our hallway. From the very beginning we've had the issue that a gas smell (and I don't know the difference in smells between burned gas or unburned gas) was coming from the return air vent whenever the unit switched off - usually a few minutes after it switched off. According to measurements made by the service tech, it is not unburned gas but we're not sure what it is or what is causing it. The Brivis distributor has been very supportive and has replaced the unit with a new one, changed the valves and has been taking this issue very seriously. According to them, we appear to be the only ones to have this problem and they are mystified as to what the cause could be. We just had our third unit installed, a newer model, and while it does seem to be less - the smell is still there. As a work around, we have been advised to force the fan to be always on - this creates a constant airflow through the return air vent, preventing the smells to flow back into the house. However there are 3 problems with this temporary solution - one, gas smell is then actually blown into the bedrooms so we are just moving the problem; two, when the unit switches off, we end up blowing cold air into the house causing the temperature to drop quicker and thus burn more gas again and three - running the fan constantly is going to wear out the fan motor and will increase electricity consumption. Now, I am not complaining about Brivis - the unit itself works as advertised and both the distributor and Brivis have invested a lot of effort to get this problem resolved. But ultimately, I just want this system to work without any gas smells in the house especially as we have young children and I am worried about what is flowing back into the house. Gas? Exhaust fumes? who knows! But we had another installation company double check the installation and take measurements to ensure that we do not have a gas leak somewhere but nothing was found. Has anyone else ever had this problem or heard of this problem? Are we truly the only ones that have this problem? And what could be the cause? Seeing that we are on our third unit, I can't believe it's a one-off fault and must be something structural? Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
