Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Sep 22, 2013 8:52 pm We live in climate zone 8 (alpine). Winters are cold but summers can still get to 30+. The house is not shaded by any trees to the north (deciduous or other). We are on a small block in town with large buildings to the east and west. Some morning sun in summer is unavoidable until we plant some tall bamboo for extra shade and sound insulation, but there is excellent shading from the west with solid buildings 2 storey in height. The build is largely passive design with all downstairs living areas gaining adequate heat/shade from sun. My concern is more around the attic conversion. I'm hoping to put the darkest colourbond roofing (monument) on but we are also creating habitable rooms within this roof space. We will use double glazed roof windows as well as some double glazing on the north gabled face. There will be more than adequate air flow within the space but I'm wondering if others think summer will be uncomfortable within the attic rooms if we stick to basic ceiling batts for insulating that space. Or should I also consider adding foil insulation? If yes which direction should we face the foil? Downstairs is adequately insulated as we're using SIPs and have ceiling bats in the floor space of the attic rooms. With combustion heating that is more than large enough for the space I'm more concerned about summer. So the issue of insulation is more for protecting the rooms upstairs. We may also choose to insulate from sound so are there other low cost options available to me that anyone can recommend? Also can anyone recommend double glazed openable roof windows that may source cheaper than velux? TIA People make one happy, not houses? I do not think so. Houses are more to be trusted than people. The issue with a cathedral type ceiling (which would be typical with attic spaces) is the lack of space within the rafter height to fit large R value batts. The foil would be a must but the installation configuration would depend upon how much ceiling space there is.
