Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Sep 20, 2013 8:19 pm Hello, I recently bought a great little 1958 weather board, tin roofed house in country Victoria. As there is no ducted heating, I have been spoiled for warmth for a long time, back to the point. I looked into the attic and discovered it has loose fill insulation, as well as modern fibreglass mats on top. I want to increase the heat held inside the house, I thought of using chip board, or wooden board flooring as an attic floor. I am guessing that this will help a lot in retaining heat. I also am considering stapling builders paper to the underside of the roof, and using cheap panel board to hide the tin roof from inside the attic, this should help with the summer heat? Have other people come across better methods? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. A friend of mine had his cousin who is a carpenter install yellow particle board ontop of his insulation much like you say to provide attic space, I suggested he put a light in there easy enough to do as there should be a million electrical wires around, nothing over the top. Another thing to consider is actual access I suggested an attic ladder and he is getting one only thing is he now has to move one rafter over a bit as the ladder needs a wider opening than the existing man hole I think its a nice project. I do think that if you seal the underside of the roof and put a wooden floor you will insulate it a fairbit. But I'm no expert. In any case itwill be awesome storage space. Re: Attic insulation floor 3May 03, 2014 11:21 am That will all help ( as far as a cheap DIY solution goes ) but make sure you try and eliminate any gaps in the insulation - 5% gaps in insulation makes it 50% less effective. Nothing will beat removing the roof sheeting and getting a decent Anticon blanket over the battens then reaffixing the roof sheeting back down though ( for summer heat ).
