Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 27, 2013 6:14 pm Hi Everyone, Trying hard to make a decision around ceiling fans, what i am after is a fan for bedrooms between 9sqm and 18sqm with an energy efficient light....remote optional. Which brands can people recommend and what size? Some say clipsal only, some hunter pacific and some martec. Any help would be great!!!!. Cheers, Phil Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 2Aug 27, 2013 6:46 pm Ceiling fans are wierd most of the brands you get are much of a muchness. I would more say the style determines the quality of it. Most of them come in 900mm and 1200mm thats the size of the blades. I would say the metal blade fans are better. they move the air heaps better then the timber ones and their heaps quicker to put together saving you on the install. If you get them from middys, ideal, Beacon their all pretty much same sort of quality. but to be honest im not a big fan of the martec ones bunnings are selling. In relation to the lights your most likely best to get the light with a screw type blub fitting and putting CFL (fleuro type) screw globes in them. They draw a lot less power then then the halogen lights, I not aware of any LED light fitting that fit into fans yet. Ask the salesman but I believe most fans have some sort of remote option you can buy you just wire them in. We plan to get NINE ceiling fans installed in our house. Our builder uses Clipsal. I've tried to research on the net but have only come up with that they are "cheap but do the job". That is all we need but if anyone can chime in with further advice I'd appreciate it!! Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 5Aug 28, 2013 6:51 pm You will be fine with the clipsal ones, Put heaps of them together, im suspicious the clipsal fans are re badged under alot of different names. The gerard brothers who used to own clipsal, own mistral and I suspect are still making the clipsal brand fans and a few others. When you put them together they look very similiar. I got nothing against the Martec fans, however just putting them together I have noticed they didn't seem as well constructed. Also from expierence I don't rate a lot of the brands bunnings sells. When it comes to suppliers Idea and Middy's sell to contractors. If a contractor has something stuff up they have purchased, and sold to a customer it becomes a nightmare and wastes a lot of time. So generally we will only sell the better quality product. Similarly if our wholesalers sell poor quality product they will get a whole heap of angry contractors in there. So generally anything you buy from an electrical wholesaler will be the better quality product. Clipsal is one of the brands I would definitely deal with. Total Breeze Air Conditioning and Electrical - Based in Melbourne http://www.totalbreeze.com.au Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 6Aug 28, 2013 9:02 pm So what do people think of the hunter pacific brand? I am currently thinking maybe the 48" intercept model?? Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 7Aug 28, 2013 10:36 pm I Like the Clipsal premium version as well but finding any information about them is crazy hard. Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 8Aug 29, 2013 11:36 am I have been doing some research on fans, I will probably be going with a DC model as they are supposed to be cheaper to run. I was looking at the Aeratron fans but they are expensive, they look modern but I think they also look a little too "plastic". http://www.lightingillusions.com.au/sho ... n-w-remote Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 9Aug 29, 2013 1:16 pm Yeah i have read that DC motors are the way to go if you can afford them. Think i am going to go with the Clipsal Premium for about $220 dollars as i need 6 of them for the house and cannot justify an extra $1200 dollars to go to a DC motor version. They have a single E27 globe holder as well and will go a Brightgreen DR1000 globe in each, can be dimmed to 10% and 1000 lumens. http://brightgreen.com/au/led-lights/br ... plications Kind Regards, Phil Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 10Aug 31, 2013 7:09 am Just one thing to double check is that the globe will fit into the fans, A lot of fans won't fit globes unless their those compact CFL's. Both length and width can be a problem. With out seeing the Fittings would be hard to tell. They also Recommend a 20mm clearance around those bulbs which might be hard to get. But as far as LED go their good quality ones. 30000 Luman hours is good. If you couldn't get 20mm clearance, I wouldn't be too fussed they will be ok. Almost all the old incandescent globes used to screw up hard against the fitting and they pumped out the heat. Also a lot of fans have the globes installed horizontally not vertically. When you look at the light propagation diagram this will effect the lighting output massively. Maybe something worth considering. Total Breeze Air Conditioning and Electrical - Based in Melbourne http://www.totalbreeze.com.au Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 11Sep 25, 2013 1:40 am I've been researching fans too. Metal fans are generally said to move more air but also be noisier - which could be annoying in the bedroom at night. I also read that wooden blades (especially cheap ones) can warp or lose their shape over time, becoming less than the ideal - thus less effective and noisier. Check out Choice's review for yourself, but from that & all my other net surfing, I have chosen Aeratron 3 blade fans for my new build. (http://www.lightingillusions.com.au/sho ... n-w-remote ) No, I haven't actually tried one yet but here's what my research says: Cons: $399 - that's mid-range actually but seems comparatively high - but I've read alot of complaints & advice from electricians about cheap fans being very noisy and failing. No light option - I guess this means downlights in the bedroom - an extra expense - but then, I've been told lights in fans are typically not great anyway. Choice rating for lounge-room use was not high as it's not as strong as a few other fans, but high marks in bedroom Pros: They claim to be the world's quietest - certainly the quietest reviewed by Choice "World's most eco-efficient" - lowest running cost by Choice The unusual shape is designed to make it work most effectively without turbulence - but it's also a look my family & I prefer It's won at least 2 design awards has remote control (no wall switch option though) eco-packaging (completely of compostable egg carton) low-waste production (all production methods with minimal environmental impact chosen) they have a DC motor all reviews I've seen so far have been positive. If anyone has one of these fans I'd love to hear from you, how effective it is please, or any issues with it. Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 13Sep 26, 2013 11:23 am kylie40 "has remote control (no wall switch option though)" I was told by an electrician in his opinion is to steer clear of the remotes as you turn them on at the wall switch, and although you turn them off with the remote the motor is still technically "on" and it causes the motor to burn out?? Maybe when you turn the Aeratron off with the remote it turns the motor off??? Perhaps this is the reason they don't have a wall switch. Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 14Oct 09, 2013 3:53 pm snuck Octain... beacon lighting has some LED fans on their site... Hey snuck, thanks for pointing these out... never seen them before might have to look into them a little harder! Total Breeze Air Conditioning and Electrical - Based in Melbourne http://www.totalbreeze.com.au Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 16Aug 12, 2015 9:07 pm Hi , My builder has quoted $350 for fan/light point. Single storey house. Can you please let me know if they do any special joinery work I mean with the framing or putting steel beam etc. I have read in the internet the installation of fan costs approx $100. Please advise Re: Ceiling Fans........Which Brands 18Aug 13, 2015 10:37 am There's no particularly special joinery work. What they do need to do put in a timber (for timber framed house) batten into the roof, which is about $1 worth of timber, and 5 minutes of time to install it at build time. They should do this anyhow for a light, but they cheap out on it and just mount the fitting into plasterboard. It's also slightly harder for the plasterers, as they need to locate the hole through the batten to allow the wire to be pulled through the ceiling. This requires them putting a few brain cells together and taking an extra couple of minutes. The electrician also runs an extra wire from the switch. Doing this post-build is quite a bit harder, as it has to be done by climbing up into the roof, and pulling the extra cable through can be a pain. $100 for the post-build is reasonable, but the builder should really be charging less than $50 for the provision at build time, based on the work involved.
