Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 16, 2013 1:29 pm I live in a two story home. Recently I built a large pergola on the north end of the house. Problem is, I didnt think about the reflected heat from the pergola roof into the upstairs brick wall. In summer it would normally not get much sun, but because of the placement of the pergola, there is a lot of reflected radiant heat that heats up the brick wall. What can I build on the outside of the brick wall that is waterproof to stop the radiant heat building up in summer. Is it possible to put some form of foam insulation on the outside, and then cover it over with cement render. Or even a colourbond fence material attached to the brickwork? I've thought about growing a vine, but then I'd need to build a rack for the soil (and set up irrigation - it gets very hot with the sun beaming down or being reflected all day). I've thought about polycarbonite awnings, but because the reflected heat is from below, it wont work. It doesnt really matter what it looks like because it cant be seen from anywhere, given the pergola blocks the view up to the bricks. I'm in the process of putting in low-e double glazed windows (next to the pergola) to stop the radiant heat entering through the windows. The whole house already has cavity wall insulation. I'm looking for ideas and thoughts as to what would be best. I'm not sure where to start. I've done some googling, but come up empty. Re: Stop radiant heat on 2 story north brick wall-reflected 2Aug 17, 2013 11:42 pm You could attach 50-70mm foam to the wall and then acrylic render it for a lightweight solution - paint it whatever suits the rest of your house. Or attach vertical battens to the brick then affix timber slats or angled timber stained to suit ( for horizontal pattern ) http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc455/stewiesno1/Timbercladding_zpsb4ab596e.jpg Vertical cladding http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc455/stewiesno1/Solitary-Home_zps12234b64.jpg Stewie We are tossing up between a Jarrahdale radiant wood fire (the Pioneer) and a convection wood fire (Innovator or Countryman) but cannot decide on which type of wood fire is… 0 5243 Hi, We have a single story MacDonald Jones house, on a waffle pod slab with steel frame.
