Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 10, 2013 5:58 pm Hi all So where do i start!! I have a 2004 Rinnai High Efficiency 30 Inbuilt Gas Space Heater. Unit was working great and still does intermittently. Worked fine for as long as i have had it until this winter. Heater is always serviced and well looked after ie removal of dust from vents regularly etc. So start of this winter when i would turn the power button on fan would start unit has always had power, but then unit would cut out by cut out i mean power light goes out on unit and fan stops. Sometimes it will get to ignition stage, solenoids will cut in and then it cuts out and sometimes it will actually light and run for a period. Since the intermittent problems started i have had Rinnai out here a couple of times, they have replaced the fan unit at the back saying there may have been excess moisture coming through flue. The unit then worked fine for about a month. Then it was doing the same random things again, so Rinnai came back out an replaced the control board. This then worked fine for a few weeks. Then the same random failures started again. As a very recent example, I spoke to a heater guy in the paper and he said sounds electrical so i plugged the unit into a wall socket in the house as opposed to behind the heater in the chimney where it has always been plugged in. This made no difference. I also took the PCB (main board) to be tested by module repair service, came back as fine, no faults. So after i got the board back i put it back in the heater connected it all back up and presto it worked and started perfect. After 2 hours it cut out. I then blew out the connections to the board and most of the clip connections i could find in the unit with compressed air. This did nothing, pressed power on and fan started, no ignition sequence and just cut out, which is what it does about 90% of the time these days. I went out for dinner came home, tried it again and boom started like there was never a problem, just as a test i left it on from approx 7pm-3am last night and it never cut out. I got home from work today and, ignition sequence started, solenoids opened about 3 times and then it just cuts out like usual again. I have tested resistance of solenoids and they are fine all the same and good resistance readings. I am running out of ideas but its something i would really like to solve, if anyone has any ideas that would be great. Maybe if someone knows a good gas heater guy and can pm details. faulty gas valve? Really don't know. Freezingly awaiting replies, thanks all. Re: Rinnai High Efficiency Inbuilt Gas Space Heater Problem 6Aug 12, 2013 8:36 pm If the thermocouple is on its way out but not completely cactus, it could potentially not be sensing that you've got a pilot intermittently. Thermocouples are a cheap thing to replace at only $20-30 each plus labour but would still need to be replaced by a gas fitter. If your heater is set to only cycle the fan on when actively heating in order not to blow cold draughts, it could also be the cause of your fan cycling issues. Re: Rinnai High Efficiency Inbuilt Gas Space Heater Problem 7Aug 14, 2013 9:38 am So yesterday I gave the pressure switch a good wack with the butt end of my screwdriver, then it started! So i turned it off and it started again and then again! So i think i have found the problem. Only thing is after about 2 hours i noticed the room fan stop, then the safety cut out kicked in after about 30 seconds. I started it after about a minute and then the room fan worked again and it stayed on all night, then this morning i noticed the room fan had stopped again, then the overheat cut in and stopped the heater. I waited about 30 seconds, it started fine and then after about a minute the room fan cut in again. Its now working fine but im wondering what could be causing the room fan to stop? Am i wrong to guess the pressure switch could also be the cause of this? Thanks for your help guys. During my exploration of the heater i noticed this screw was a bit loose... http://i.imgur.com/thwgxF8.jpg Looks to me like a burn pressure test point, and as far as i understand this should be fully shut/tightly closed if not testing, can anyone confirm this? Thanks. UPDATE found out it should be tightly closed.
