Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 06, 2013 12:36 pm The old later 60s house we bought has a very old Carrier unit. It sits outside the house on the ground. The vents look quite dusty. When we powered it on though, the thing still runs. But I have been told the old fella will cost me an arm and leg to run.
The house has a pretty good duct heating unit, feeding from ground. I am not sure which will be the best way: Option1: is to get rid of the old Carrier A/C and replace with Evaporate Cooling Option2: Install new Duct A/C by re-using those old ducts in my ceiling The second option just my assumption. Not sure if it is really doable. Has anyone had this done before? I will post some photos of the unit soon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The guys have started the job today. Here are the old ducts they pulled out from the roof, along with that faulty split system. If you do go down that route and replace ducts, try to replace with ducts with as high a R rating as you can afford. Re: Very old Carrier Duct A/C 3Aug 07, 2013 8:46 am Actually, which option will be cheaper? Option 1 or Option 2? How much roughly it will cost me to remove the old duct system and putin new Evaporate Cooling unit and pipes? Re: Very old Carrier Duct A/C 4Aug 12, 2013 12:08 am Hi An evaporative system will always win hands down when compared to the cost of refrigerated ducted air conditioning. So therefore option 1. You may be better off getting a local tradesman in to assess and price the decommission of the existing ducted system and give you a price for the installation of a new evaporative system. Re: Very old Carrier Duct A/C 5Aug 19, 2013 9:44 am Got a est price from ColdFlow. It will cost me around $5k to replace the old duct system with Breezair Evap cooling. Looking for an 2nd quote at the moment. Re: Very old Carrier Duct A/C 7Aug 23, 2013 9:10 am Got Weather World came in had a look. Their price is almost identical. I have been told on some other forum they are owned by the same owner. Maybe worth to try a third one. I have been told on some other forum they are owned by the same owner. Maybe worth to try a third one. I believe Weather World is actually owned by Coldflow, along with a couple of other AC companies (including Sustainable Air). I got burned by this a while back myself, with three quotes from three "different" companies turning out to be from the same place. Give Temperature Plus a try, they really impressed me with their work. HD Re: Very old Carrier Duct A/C 9Aug 24, 2013 6:38 am hey, I can give you a quote on that! and we are NOT owned by coldflow. I PMed you my details. Total Breeze Air Conditioning and Electrical - Based in Melbourne http://www.totalbreeze.com.au Re: Very old Carrier Duct A/C 10Aug 29, 2013 10:10 am Thanks guys.
