Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 05, 2013 9:33 pm Hi all Wanting some opinions on air con. In our new house we have double brick cavity insulation, plus roof insulation. No cooling as yet except ceiling fans and our only heating is a wood fire. Looking to put air con in but what? We have found in the past ducted systems extremely expensive to run and was wondering if we do split systems where we need them if that would be better. Then we are only running a small unit where needed instead of a big unit even though we may only be running one zone. Is this more energy efficient or does it not matter. I know you can get systems where you can run a couple of split systems per outside unit. I hope I have made sense. Any help appreciated Re: Air conditioning ducted split????? 2Jul 08, 2013 9:37 pm Hi Charnley, We're looking at doing the split system thing too. We were advised by someone at Good Guys not to have a couple of split systems off the one outside unit b/c it might cost more for the installation b/c one of your inside points might be much further from the unit, so it may be cheaper to have another unit closer. But I guess perhaps with a two story home you'd have the one unit and it would work if the inside units were one above the other. Guess it's prob best to take your plans into somewhere like Good guys or Harvey Norman and ask them what they'd recommend. We're yet to do that, but will prob do it when we're close to completion. Re: Air conditioning ducted split????? 3Jul 08, 2013 9:53 pm You can get multi head split system but as mentioned above it all depends on the layout of your house. We called a few a/c places a couple years ago, they all were quite honest about the system we needed (which was not a multi head even though it was more expensive). When trying to describe our layout to salesmen in stores or over the phone they would try and sell a multi head. Basically my advice would be to try and get some referrals and call out a few mobs that do supply and install, they know what's going to work in your house. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Air conditioning ducted split????? 4Jul 09, 2013 11:21 pm Thanks Guys will be doing that soon. Ducted looks a lot neater but happy to save some money at this stage. Re: Air conditioning ducted split????? 5Jul 11, 2013 8:39 am I wouldn't go to Good Guys or Harvey Norman, unless you can get a really good deal on a system and have a friend or someone to install. Those places do organise installation, but they'll just be outsourcing it to someone. I'd be more inclined to go to a specialist. They are going to be able to recommend the right thing for you and install it too, and their prices will be competitive. The sales person in an electrical retailer probably doesn't know what's best.
