Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 09, 2013 10:12 am As the title says, but to expand a little my house has ducted central heating that is set to maintain 21 degree's, with the thermostat at around 140cm off floor level. Sometimes we come home and the house feels really cold, but the thermostat is showing 21, other times it feels nice and warm again showing 21. At first I thought maybe the thermostat was faulty so brought a cheap mercury thermostat and no, the house is consistently at 21. So what causes a house to feel cold at various times> Re: Why does my house sometimes feel cold? 2Jun 09, 2013 10:48 am Usually the thermostat is on a wall away from the windows On a cold day those windows can be huge cold radiators making you feel cold near them. Re: Why does my house sometimes feel cold? 3Jun 10, 2013 10:14 am I said this elsewhere but ... What is the living area aspect ? North aspect means warmer in winter. As the sun is higher in summer it won't mean hotter in summer. Aspect and the clever use of windows etc means a cheaper living cost. Aspect is always the key in planning a house IMO. It beats all the insulation, glazing, material questions hands down. BUT - if you are built you have to look at insulation et al. Re: Why does my house sometimes feel cold? 4Jun 10, 2013 10:16 am Also - where the thermostat is positioned makes a difference. If it is in a warm spot - it will cut the heater off earlier ... and the other spots (cooler) will remain cooler. The thermostat location is what I though was wrong in the first place as it was right above the return. I figured that it was pulling warm air down making that area artificially warmer than the rest of the house. I was right, because a thermostat moved away from the return was about 1-2 degrees or so cooler. Thanks for the other advice, but what I am getting at is the temperature as measured by a separate standalone thermostat is showing that the house is at a nice constant temperature. But some days the lounge for example feels cold but at other times it feels quite comfortable yet in all cases a separate mercury thermostat is showing a constant temperature. That's what has me confused. I think the advice above about the windows is probably what is going on as it is the super cold days where it feels cold, so gather the windows are convecting all the heat out, but the heater is topping it up, with the in between time when it feels coldest. Re: Why does my house sometimes feel cold? 6Jun 13, 2013 10:54 pm I have also noticed the 'feeling' cold even when the heat is 21-23 degrees. I have 2 old fashioned thermometers that I have used to test the temperature throughout the house and the house appears to have a even temperature throughout and I am not aware of any cold corners. I have wondered if it is not the house temperature but me and the wife. It could be a relative thing, that is coming from a warmer car into the house resulting in the house feeling cold as it is cooler than the car you just left. I have noticed, well I think I have, on these days that the house feels cold that after a shower the house no longer feels cold. If its dull and overcast you may feel colder than you actually are. If its dull and overcast you may feel colder than you actually are. I find in the morning when I get out of bed 18 feels hot, but in the afternoon/evening need a minimum of 21. 18 then feels cold.
