Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 07, 2013 1:47 am We are designing a new, 2 storey house. We definitely want ceiling fans in the upstairs bedrooms. Although ceiling fans can be installed in rooms 2.4m high, our architect is strongly advising against it in case someone (anyone taller than us) puts their hand into the moving fan while dressing. While it would be lovely to have 2.7m ceilings in the bedrooms, I expect it would add $thousands to the cost and put us over budget. So, how bad would it be to have fans in 2.4m bedroom? Thanks for any input! Re: ceiling fan with 2.4m high ceilings? 4Jun 07, 2013 7:36 am I think 2.4 is OK. There is a danger I guess - but hardly that bad. If above a bed I guess you have to watch out for kids jumping ... Re: ceiling fan with 2.4m high ceilings? 5Jun 07, 2013 7:42 am Yeah kids jumping and parents have a habit of lifting their young kids up high too. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: ceiling fan with 2.4m high ceilings? 6Jun 07, 2013 10:30 am I put in ceiling fans in bedrooms of my last house with 2400 ceilings. They were directly over the beds. My family has lived to tell the tale... lol I think they are being a little alarmist. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Re: ceiling fan with 2.4m high ceilings? 7Jun 07, 2013 12:44 pm My parents have 2.4 m ceilings and ceiling fans and happily have reported exactly 0 injuries in the 25-odd years since the fans were first installed. Wasn't there a Mythbusters episode where they debunked the myth that someone could be beheaded by a fan? Depending on the material used in the blades you'd certainly get bruised, possibly laceration or even a broken finger if it was at full speed but that's about it I would imagine. And as pointed out above, that's only going to be an issue if the fan isn't located above the bed (unless you stand on your bed to get dressed?) Sounds a bit like they're worried about liability falling back on them. ~ Anne I used to be indecisive but now I'm not quite sure. Eeek - We're embarking on a knockdown rebuild! Fans in both kids rooms and 2 in the main living area. All still alive and well Fans in the bedroom were in the centre and beds/furniture around the edge of the room (single beds) and it looked fine. They weren't centred in the living/dining area due to existing lights and really, we never noticed it looking odd. Re: ceiling fan with 2.4m high ceilings? 10Jun 17, 2013 6:35 am Have you looked into having 2.55m high ceilings, we just did our house with that to allow for fans - and it was alot cheaper than 2.7 - and it looks quite high! Re: ceiling fan with 2.4m high ceilings? 15Aug 04, 2013 10:39 am Ceiling fans above a bed only need to be operated at low speeds. If you have concerns, then you can always get non metal blades. A person I knew invented a blade less ceiling fan over 20 years ago but development branched off into other areas. I am nevertheless surprised that it wasn't commercialised as it was compact and looked great. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Re: ceiling fan with 2.4m high ceilings? 16Aug 04, 2013 11:19 am After a while, it becomes instinct to look up and check for fans before carrying anything long into a room, lifting a small child into the air or making the bed to check for a fan. People think I've cracked when I look up and check for fans even when they don't have them in their houses. Re: ceiling fan with 2.4m high ceilings? 17Aug 13, 2013 5:17 pm you can buy 'low profile' ceiling fans which are a good choice for rooms with slightly lower ceiling. Just did a low profile search on this site - there's a few options: http://www.lumera.com.au/?s=low+profile ... pe=product Re: ceiling fan with 2.4m high ceilings? 18Aug 24, 2013 6:44 am Honestly, If you put in the timber bladed ceiling fans you should be ok. I've actually put my hand into a metal blade fan on high, by accident. While I wouldn't recommend putting you hands in ceiling fans ever. It was interesting to note that it didn't cut of my fingers or even rip open my skin it throbbed for a few seconds, yelled a few expletives and moved on. The Timber blade ones are even more unlikely to hurt you and on the off chance you did accidentally put your hand on there you should be ok. I certainly wouldn't use that as a reason not to install them Total Breeze Air Conditioning and Electrical - Based in Melbourne http://www.totalbreeze.com.au Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
