Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Mar 19, 2013 8:41 pm Hi everyone. I'm creating this thread hoping to get some advice in relation to the heating and cooling of our house. Our house was constructed in the 60s and as such there is no wall insulation. Recently I had the roof replaced so whilst the roof was off I had some R5 ceiling batts installed. We have also had carpet installed in the lounge room where before it had floorboards and have replaced the carpet in the three bedrooms and in the hallway. In the kitchen, family room and dining area I have installed floating floorboards. The bathrooms have tiles. Basically in summer the house seems to hold its heat and in winter it seems the house is cold except for the lounge room which has a reverse cycle air conditioner in it. Putting the insulation in the roof did make a difference that is for sure and I have no doubt at all that insulating the walls would make a huge difference. In a fair bit of the house we have old wooden sash windows and the other windows are aluminium windows. So obviously insulating the walls is the obvious choice which will mean replacing all the plaster on the external walls. Our external walls are brick. There is plans to replace the old sash windows but I need to get some cash together first. So I hoping for some advice on what else I can do? Is insulating the walls the only real option? Re: Advice Needed - Heating/Cooling 2Apr 03, 2013 2:04 pm I am in a similar situation and would love to hear comments on this also. My house is on a hill with a southerly aspect and flat roof. Oh and cut into sandstone so it's *always* damper than desirable.. cheers Re: Advice Needed - Heating/Cooling 3Apr 03, 2013 7:32 pm Draught proofing is relatively cheap and can help. In summer keeping the sun out of the house is a big thing especially for double brick construction. Closing thick curtains in the winter will help. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Advice Needed - Heating/Cooling 4Apr 04, 2013 1:52 pm OK - lets try a hypothetical. Consider an old single room brick veneer house with; - no ceiling insulation - no wall insulation - large glass areas to the South - some glass on East & West For summer comfort I think its pretty easy, ceiling insulation and shading on East/West. For winter, to me the options are more complex - obviously ceiling insulation then you have; - heavy curtains - double glazing (on South only?) - wall insulation Which would give the best bang-for-buck ? Oh, and morphjk there is an option to retrofit wall insulation. There are places (I have found justrite and enviroflx) that will do this - they basically blow in insulation to the cavity from the ceiling or drill holes into the walls if there is no access.
