Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 14Feb 09, 2019 2:17 pm Just wondering if anyone knows of resources to find the av. in-ground temperature for any region in Australia? Trying to work out whether it's worth insulating the slab in SE QLD for a zero energy house. Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 15Feb 09, 2019 2:43 pm Here's some Queensland data. Them termites really enjoy some of the slab edge insulation materials. WOOPS! link fixed... http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ60604.shtml Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 16Feb 10, 2019 9:08 pm supa007 Just wondering if anyone knows of resources to find the av. in-ground temperature for any region in Australia? Trying to work out whether it's worth insulating the slab in SE QLD for a zero energy house. I'd expect that in SE QLD you'd be a good candidate for a ground coupled slab. As the ground will be cooler in summer than the air temperature, & warmer in winter. Yeah, further north in QLD the ground temperature would be too hot, so a ground coupled slab would be detrimental. But I wouldn't expect this to be the case further south. So yeah, determine your ground temperature, before you consider adding insulation to your slab. Unless of course you have underfloor heating (unlikely), in which case insulation would be necessary. Good you're thinking of this stuff, most people don't. Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 18Feb 17, 2019 4:58 pm supa007 Our ground temp at 1m depth currently is about 29 degrees... Still higher than the indoor ideal of 24 degrees. So, I think I might just insulate my slab all around. What is it like at night? Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 19Feb 17, 2019 5:03 pm Waiting for BOM climate data services to send me their archived data. But I don’t think they have data collection point at night... But at 1m depth, it shouldn’t have much in terms of diurnal variation. Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 20Feb 17, 2019 5:32 pm Your slab will be almost on the ground, not at 1 m depth, on the other side. If you get some diurnal variation at the top soil level, you should be good without insulation due to the flywheel effect. Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16159 4 5121 |
