This is why: 1 Who will certify your electrical? 2 Who will give you a certificate of plumbing compliance? 3 Who will modify your roof structure and covering, guarantee, including water tightness? 4 Testing and commissioning? 5 Probably a void warranty for self installation (not to mention getting builder off the hook for leaks if your home is under warranty) 6 It will probably cost you more with bonus headaches than if you get competent contractor. 7 Contractor who buys dozens will pay less per unit than you for one over the counter. However if you are young and brave you got to start somewhere. However if you are young and brave you got to start somewhere. A friend of mine, who is very technically minded did his own and certainly much better than my so called professional installed. He purchased the parts from Bradflo in Canberra. As to your points I think you have jumped to the conclusion that he was going to do all the work himself. Doing it yourself could also be as simple as buying the parts, organising the specialist tradies and doing the rest yourself. So maybe some real advice might be in order rather than just say too hard get someone to do it, when you have no idea what so ever what the poster is capable of. Re: Installing own evapartaive air con 4Feb 09, 2013 1:22 am I Agree AJW I am a steel worker in Melbourne and had my a/c installed by a "professional" what a joke the idiot didnt even seal up the return duct in the roof being a refridge system i ended up making a timber box to cover odd shaped return cavity. I had a "professional " tiler replace some tiles from a break in the guy couldnt even be bothered cleaning the all the excess glue off the slab before laying new tiles i had to do it for him while he stood there watching. My bathroom tiler even left all the spacers in even when the BCA states they must be removed. The "professional" plumber is still fixing issues with my sewer pipes 5 years after house built. The "professional" electrician fitted 1 circuit breaker for my entire house light circuits when i asked him about the a/s having a note for fitting 2 breakers due to convenience replied its only a guide. The " professional" painter did the worst job i have ever seen. I am a steel worker and would put any of my work being tiling, framing, plumbing and electrical up against any professional any day of the week. they seem to be all careless and many dont even know the standards they are required to work to. I would install it all my self and just have it inspected to ensure it complies. Re: Installing own evapartaive air con 5Feb 22, 2013 6:44 am In my opinion, and I have installed a few myself, it isnt too hard. The supplier will provide installation instructions and you will follow them. In the outback, one cannot easily obtain tradies to do things - the station people have to do it themselves. The manage OK with things like this. Shop about and you will get a good price for the gear. cheers How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 4029 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
