Will watch this with interest. Re: Reverse cycle vs evap ducted with gas duct Perth area 22Jan 07, 2013 11:36 pm I think we are going to go R/C especially after today's muggy weather I think we will have to just be smart with how much we use it during the summer Building the "Avoca" by Dale Alcock Re: Reverse cycle vs evap ducted with gas duct Perth area 23Jan 07, 2013 11:45 pm Haha busy we have been cursing our evap system alllll day!!! I think it's worse because we know what we're moving to in a few months time But today was horrible. Building the Riva by Dale Alcock Homes. Not so much with the evap but the ducted heating. I always thought it was a lot more cheaper to run than on the old gas heaters, but after reading what you and Missem wrote I'm now having second thoughts. Can I ask both of you if you were zoning off rooms with the heating or whether you were heating the whole house? $1200 for running it 6 hours a day seems so expensive. We had our gas heaters running all day and never had a bill over $500 . So confused now...arghhhh!! Re: Reverse cycle vs evap ducted with gas duct Perth area 25Jan 21, 2013 5:29 pm Super interested in this thread! I'm looking at exactly the same thing... I'm more so thinking about heating... Stupid question... Can ducted cooling also be heating? Like as in the split system you get to put on the walls, can we get that but ducted? All I see is $$$$$ Re: Reverse cycle vs evap ducted with gas duct Perth area 26Jan 21, 2013 5:31 pm Yep, ducted reverse cycle. We enquired about cooling only but were told its always cooling and heating. Re: Reverse cycle vs evap ducted with gas duct Perth area 28Jan 22, 2013 7:20 pm $15,000 would be a rather large system. Ordinary, regular sized 4 x 2 should possibly set you back $10 to $12,000. Re: Reverse cycle vs evap ducted with gas duct Perth area 29Jan 22, 2013 9:38 pm $10 / $12k is a lot nicer a figure... Don't know why, but $15k seems to tip me over the edge even though it's only another $3,000. Will get the quote hopefully tomorrow & will let you know. It'll be interesting to see, either way. We had our gas heaters running all day and never had a bill over $500 . So confused now...arghhhh!! Sorry only just saw this but yes, definitely zoned. We were running just the living areas mainly at night. No point doing the bedrooms when you got nice thick doona to sleep under. Also noticed that it never really warmed that well - nowhere near as good as R/C heating anyways. Mainly took the chill off and that's about it really. When we got our bill we were so shocked and rang up Alinta to basically contest the bill. They said they get lots of calls from people who have ducted gas with massive bills. There seems to be a belief that gas is cheap well it certainly isn't. One lady we spoke to even said the systems can cost $6 - $8 an hour to run. Seemed pretty true in our case. Stick to reverse cycle ducted, you get the best of both worlds. Building the Riva by Dale Alcock Homes. We don't know anyone that has had or who has ducted gas so it's hard to know whether or not it is the cheaper option. It certainly goes against everything that I've read, that ducted gas heating is more cost effective and cheaper to run opposed to the gas convector heaters. From what you've told me, that's enough for me to definatley go with another option. Although I know what your saying with the reverse cycle , for me I think it's still too expensive to run. I've read what everyone has said on here about the evaporative, and I agree totally, but we've always had evaporative and yeh doesn't work so well on humid days, but it's very cheap to run, and luckily in Perth we don't have heaps of humidity. I think with the heating we'll just get gas points installed after we get keys. Least I know the gas heaters we have warm the rooms enough without having a huge bill to contend with. Plus one of my daughters is a major heater hog, if we had reverse cycle ...geez she would have that on 24/7!! So dumb this 6 star ratings crap not allowing gas bayonet points to be installed by the builders. Grrrr.....Anyway that's a whole other convo/thread..ha!! Thanks again, I appreciate your feedback. That decision has been made (with help from MissEm). Re: Reverse cycle vs evap ducted with gas duct Perth area 32Jan 23, 2013 9:51 pm Yes the problem with reverse cycle is that people want the house like a toaster oven and put the temp on 28 degrees and the thing is constantly working hard. Same in summer, as nice as it is to be in a house that's like Antarctica, its damn well expensive, which is why they say leave it on 24 degrees heating or cooling. Good luck exploring your options, and hey don't just take our word for it, do your own research and see what's best for you Building the Riva by Dale Alcock Homes. I know it's pricey?!!) and where we are building doesn't have natural gas so we'll be getting bottles. A friend whose house is a 1/3 the size of what we're building that lives in the same town (central Vic) went through 1 has bottle in 5 days. If they're $100 a pop, then thats bloody expensive. Geeeeee can you still change your mind? Re: Reverse cycle vs evap ducted with gas duct Perth area 35Jan 24, 2013 9:09 pm Probably not. I think we'll see how it goes & then reassess. We may end up getting a split system on the wall in te main living space, but who knows.
