Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 28, 2012 4:53 pm We got the keys to our new split level house with open plan living above the kids bedrooms, play area, hallways. We'd specified soundscreen / soundproofing batts to the entire subfloor, as well as the hallways. On closer inspection we found they missed it. What is the best way to install insulation / soundproofing at this point? I'd thought about spray in foam via the downlight holes to minimize damage, but apparently this can't be done. The builder wants to cut a hole in the downstairs ceiling and blow in insulation to the subfloor and cut out a section in the halls to stuff batts up / down past the noggins. I would let the builder do what he wants. But I would also ask him to appoint an acoustic engineer like... http://marshallday.com/regionpage/marsh ... -australia. From what I can gather blown insulation isn't common practice anymore, but I did come across granulated rockwool from Bradford - http://www.bradfordinsulation.com.au/Pr ... -Fine.aspx It's a commercial product that would be more costly, but Bradford only had 3 x 12.5 kgs bags in stock and 6-8 week lead time. After speaking with their insulation department for possible installers, they effectively said you can't do blown insulation into a subfloor. I gather you can't get a consistent uniform layer by simply pushing the hose around through the posi-struts. They suggested the only way to do it correctly would be to remove plaster and install soundscreen batts as original intended. Obviously the better solution would be to also install heavier plasterboard like Gyprock Soundchek - http://www.gyprock.com.au/oursolutions/ ... tions.aspx I spoke with the builder and asked them to remove the plaster and install rockwool batts, so we'll see how we go.
