Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 23, 2012 2:49 pm Hmmm. I hope I have not overlooked a post on this. We are building in Geelong, double storey. Noone I know has ceiling fans in their houses here but I am starting to think they are a good idea. We usually have evap cooling. I would love to hear people's thoughts. Thanks Re: Ceiling fans in Victoria 2Nov 24, 2012 2:34 pm Ceiling fans are cheap to operate and the breeze cools without the humidity of evaporative cooling. The only issue is that you will normally require higher ceilings as the blades should be 2.1m from the floor. Re: Ceiling fans in Victoria 3Nov 24, 2012 6:08 pm I just put a fan in my bedroom - it gets really stuffy in there and it will be perfect for circulating the air without cooling the whole house.. Our windows open really low to the ground so any cool breeze from the outside goes around the foot of the bed and not over us. I also have evaporating cooling. Re: Ceiling fans in Victoria 5Nov 25, 2012 10:46 pm We just got a futura from beacon lighting put in 2 bedrooms and a Fanaway put in our bedroom. Amazing. We have no insulation at the moment (old 1950s house we are renovating), and on an 30 degree day, the house still doesn't get that hot. It's a weatherboard home with a very high pitched roof and 3 metre ceilings which may have something to do with it. It will save you money as some days you dont need cooling on in the whole house... especially on the second level you will notice the difference. The fanaway is australian designed and the blades retract so that it looks like a standard light. Amazing. http://www.fanaway.com/ Can't recommend them enough even at $350 each. The futura fans for the bedrooms are fine and they are $129 each. Re: Ceiling fans in Victoria 6Nov 29, 2012 2:50 pm Thanks mynameisjonas. Checked out the fanaway. They look awesome, I love that the blades retract. Will give them some serious consideration. Re: Ceiling fans in Victoria 7Nov 29, 2012 10:07 pm dreaminghouses Thanks mynameisjonas. Checked out the fanaway. They look awesome, I love that the blades retract. Will give them some serious consideration. No worries, it looks amazing in our place (I think) and just looks like a normal light. They give off an incredibly strong burst of air, as they have specially shaped aero blades that also aren't as big as regular blades. They also don't make as much noise. They are truly an incredible Australian designed product. Go into a Beacon Store to check them out. It's a best seller! Re: Ceiling fans in Victoria 8Dec 01, 2012 9:37 pm Ahhhh...Fanaways. Things to keep in mid with the Fanaway are: -After a couple of years running the blades are subject to getting hairline cracks along the leading edge. Keep an eye on this. Whilst we had no blade failures on the ten we had in Darwin, we had two sets of blades replaced under warranty. -To clean the blades is a bit of an exercise as you have to pull out the blades (two opposite one) to get the blades out far enough to clean the top and bottom. The cleaning information comes in the instruction manual. -We had a couple where the blades would not fully extend after sitting idle for some time due to corrosion of the springs for the blades. Quick fix for this problem: upon installation of the fan have the electrician put a rust inhibitor (Dri-Lube) on the springs. May not be a problem in a drier climate though. Re: Ceiling fans in Victoria 9Jan 13, 2013 5:43 pm Fans are brilliant. We have always had fans but haven't got around to it in the new house (still looking for the right one) and its a pain when you just want a bit of a breeze but can't open a door when it's mid 30's but not hot enough to put a/c on. It gets very hot here (few days of 51 degrees already) and summer is normally 40+ and even with the reverse cycle ac on the fans just help move the cool air around. They are especially good if thehumidity is high. I lived in Darwin before there was any air-conditioning. How we loved our fans. Re: Ceiling fans in Victoria 11Mar 17, 2013 4:53 pm Hi, I am in Lara, our current house is 11 years old, Brick veneer with 8ft ceilings. I have 2 split system air cons in the house and 1 ceiling fan, we have had it probably 6-7 years. I use it all the time. When we build our new house it will have 10ft ceilings, but I will definitely be putting fans in, maybe 3 or 4. I do like the fanaway design, I must have a look at one at Beacon lighting. Col. Re: Ceiling fans in Victoria 13Mar 18, 2013 6:04 pm Personally I'd never get one that doesn't retract. That's why the FanAway is so good in my opinion. Re: Ceiling fans in Victoria 14Apr 03, 2013 3:14 pm ceiling fans are a very energy efficient way of keeping cool! There are a few new models on the market at the moment that have DC motors, they are really quiet and still move a good amount of air. I installed one called 'The Grange with DC motor' a few months back for a customer (im a sparky by trade), very impressed with it! If you want one that retracts there is a fan called the 'Fiore' and the 'wraptor', both really unique looking to the point you wouldnt even think they were fans when they are closed! Hi jonas, WE love the fanaway design too and it is more affordable than the similar Vento's Mela. After some http://hdbrenovation2009.blogspot.sg/2013/05/ceiling-fan-comparison-chart.html research work, we went back to the conventional ceiling fan. For reference, this is the Austlii reference.
