Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 19, 2012 3:32 pm Greetings Planning house in Kelmscott Hills, Perth, am looking at insulation One of the long walls will be facing south, with no direct sun and will be in shade year round. This level houses the main bed, walk in robe and on other side of stairs, the loungeroom On the 2nd level, kitchen, meals and bathroom are also facing south and will be under the balcony of the top level In anyone's experience, would I need insulation on the south facing wall, given they are always in shade. Winter for me, is not an issue re warming - as i dont really believe in any other warming other than another jumper and thick socks. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Cheers Justin Re: insulation in all walls? 2Nov 19, 2012 4:28 pm You will still be getting lots of heat through the walls even if the walls are in the shade and you don't want your bedroom hot when you go to bed. Re: insulation in all walls? 3Nov 19, 2012 4:33 pm cheers bash, i would be insulating the east and west facing walls and the north facing wall will be mostly glass, double glazed if need be with large eaves to create shade. Aircon too. maybe drop the insulation down to R1.5 (esp if wall space depth is an issue) ? early days yet - havent bought block yet but doing some enquiries across all fields. just need a surveyor to reply to my email. Re: insulation in all walls? 4Nov 19, 2012 5:56 pm Even south facing walls will still get summer sun in the early morning and late evening. Probably not enough to hugely build up heat from direct sunlight (as opposed to ambient air temp outside), but probably still worth insulating for, particularly in areas you can't zone or close off from the rest of the house. Probably also worth thinking about your south-facing windows, assuming non-insulated brick still a lot better at insulating than a double-glazed window (albeit infinitely worse at providing natural ventilation and light) Re: insulation in all walls? 5Nov 19, 2012 6:24 pm i wont be having south facing windows (back of top level faces - more or less - an embankment), south facing bottom level will be totall undercover but i take your point re closing off - top level is very open - so will more than likely insulate that south wall.
