Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 04, 2012 2:55 pm We have a two storey W.B. house. We have ducted heating but don't have any cooling or air-conditioning in the house at all. The front part of the house always stays cool, but upstairs and in the back room which face west get very hot. We don't really need it for the whole house, mainly in the backroom which is an openplan kitchen, meals and living area, and upstairs in the two bedrooms and open plan kids TV room above the stairwell We desperately need some air conditioning soon. We need some advice. Any suggestions or advice? What is the best type of airconditioning/cooling? Something efficient and not too expensive to run. Re: Air- conditioning 2Oct 04, 2012 3:25 pm Such a can of worms, best ac? Depends where you are as well! Evaporative cooling is a whole house solution, and can kind of be zoned, if there is no register in the room and the windows are shut it won't blow air there! Similarly if it's installed upstairs with the vents near the edges and the doors and windows are only open downstairs the air will have to go down to get out! It's cheap to run, and works well with dry heat, totally useless with high humidity though! Refrigerated ac is flexible, if you can close off rooms then small splits work well, otherwise you need something bigger and more expensive to install and run! But don't install a split in an open plan area and think it will do that area, it well try and do the whole open plan and if it's too small it will run constantly, breaking down earlier, and chewing the power like there is no tomorrow! You get the best temperatures from a correctly sized refrigerated unit, an evaporative cooler will usually only get a few degrees below ambient, however in an upstairs area ambient can be less than room temperature! 2 Re: Air- conditioning 3Nov 29, 2012 1:10 pm Hi Anyone, I have a few issue with Brivis HX 23 IXA with add on colling Actron SRA 190c. Heating is woking perfectly and able to choose all zone setup. When come to cooling the can choose preferred zone and its only cool the lounge and living area only. Could anyone please help me how can i fix this problem. Both heating and cooling units are less than 6 months old. Thx in advance. Rockyreh Re: Air- conditioning 6Nov 30, 2012 7:27 am Amazing Grace The front part of the house always stays cool, but upstairs and in the back room which face west get very hot. It sounds like the afternoon sun is overheating certain parts of your house. If you have windows on the Western side external shading (blinds or similar) will help keep your house cooler without the ongoing energy costs. You'll probably still need air-conditioning but the cooling effect will be greater with reduced energy usage. Re: Air- conditioning 7Nov 30, 2012 2:34 pm We only have 1 x air con unit in the loungeroom, that's the west facing open plan area. It gets very hot. We dont any any in the bedrooms. My advice. Get ceiling fans in the room that heat up the most. We bought a 1950's house with a 70s open plan extension on it. Very modern for that era. But no insulation in the front of the house. We installed ceiling fans and they work a treat. It was 26 degrees over night in Melbourne last night. Air temperature of 30 degrees in my 3 year old daughter and our room, and it was pleasant enough to sleep. Ceiling fans are also incredibly cost effective to run (and buy) and we have a fanaway one. The blades retract so when its not use in use it just looks like a light. So cool! And bascially silent at night too. http://www.fanaway.com/ Also look at installing some solar film. This blocks out around 50% and up to 71% of solar energy coming through into the house. It makes a massive difference and we'll be doing this to our back walls. Good luck. http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/e ... ge_Series/ Anybody know any good and reasonably priced Air conditioning contractors/companies that could install a ducted air conditioning system in the Central Coast NSW for a small… 0 8991 How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5928 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
