Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation Re: Air- conditioning 7Nov 30, 2012 2:34 pm We only have 1 x air con unit in the loungeroom, that's the west facing open plan area. It gets very hot. We dont any any in the bedrooms. My advice. Get ceiling fans in the room that heat up the most. We bought a 1950's house with a 70s open plan extension on it. Very modern for that era. But no insulation in the front of the house. We installed ceiling fans and they work a treat. It was 26 degrees over night in Melbourne last night. Air temperature of 30 degrees in my 3 year old daughter and our room, and it was pleasant enough to sleep. Ceiling fans are also incredibly cost effective to run (and buy) and we have a fanaway one. The blades retract so when its not use in use it just looks like a light. So cool! And bascially silent at night too. http://www.fanaway.com/ Also look at installing some solar film. This blocks out around 50% and up to 71% of solar energy coming through into the house. It makes a massive difference and we'll be doing this to our back walls.
