Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 26, 2012 9:54 pm We are buildings new 2 storey house and installing ducted air. We have it in our current house and it struggles a fair bit in summer. Our current house is not well insulated so I think this is a big reason for this. Anyway the original unit included in the new build was a 12kw Fujitsu inverter single phase. We have since upgraded to 3 phase power. I queried the air con guy about if I could run the whole house at once (about 220m2 internal) he said no well he said yes but he said it would struggle especially on a Brisbane summers day. So we are looking to upgrade to 14 or 18 kw system possible Actron or Daikin. I'm not sure if this will be overkill. Obviously it is costing more. I'm ok to pay it but if it's too much then will end being a waste. Appreciate people's thoughts Thanks My Knock down and Rebuild thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=54685 Our Building Blog http://ourknockdownrebuild.blogspot.com.au/ Re: Upsizing air con 2Jun 26, 2012 11:30 pm Our house is going to be around 230 living and we are getting a Fujitsu 20 kW system installed. I have been told by several Aircon shops that we would not be able to run the entire house at the same time without pushing the Aircon. http://www.fujitsugeneral.com.au/product/192/artc72latu If you push your Aircon all the time it is likely to have a higher failure rate. Cheers Lab Upsizing air con 3Jun 27, 2012 10:43 pm Thanks blacklab ( we have a yellow lab!) That makes a lot of sense. We wouldn't be running it all zones all the times but I wanted to be able to for those steamy summer days usually around Christmas My Knock down and Rebuild thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=54685 Our Building Blog http://ourknockdownrebuild.blogspot.com.au/ Re: Upsizing air con 4Jul 04, 2012 2:30 pm We went the whole hog and put in two units. One 12.5/14.9 Kw for the smaller upstairs and a 14.5/16.3 Kw for the larger downstairs. It was obviously a bit more expensive but had the following advantages; 1. Didn't need any ducting from the second story roof to downstairs therefore saved space. 2. Quite often in summer when upstairs requires cooling, downstairs doesn't so the smaller unit can just tick over cooling the area that is required rather than having a big 20kW+ unit running to just cool upstairs. Obviousl when it is very hot they both run. 3. I would rather spend a bit extra and know I have something that definitely does the job rather than save a few bucks and never have it cool enough or warm enough. You can zone it down to one room, means that there is no common area that has to run all the time, making it more efficient than other brands. Upper living is 110 sqm and lower living is 220sqm. Cost was just under $23k with two controllers for the upstairs unit ( for upstairs there is a controller upstairs and a controller downstairs as I did not want to go up and down the stairs to turn it off and on.) They are boh 3 phase Daikin units. I was quoted approx $15k+ for 1 unit that was only going to be able to do 4 zones at any one time and there would have been additional costs for boxing off ducts to downstairs etc from upstairs. If you go for a three pipe, as opposed to two pipe system you can have different units heating and cooling at the same time, two pipe, one heats/cools they all heat/cool! Almost certain these units would cost more to install, but I feel they would give the lowest running cost, and all you need between inside and out is some cables and refrigeration pipes! As for the size, you will have to have faith in the installers, depends on size, insulation, area, orientation of house / windows, window treatment etc, so many factors will affect your actual cooling / heating load Re: Upsizing air con 10Jul 05, 2012 8:58 pm stormjr Another option would be a VRV system, where you have a large outdoor unit, but you can then have several indoor units, either wall hung or ducted units, you can then have any combination of units on or off (and running different temperatures).
